Question about constipation?

My cat Powder was diagnosed 2 weeks ago and he is on 1u of Lantus and fancy feast twice daily. I am giving him 7 - 8 oz of food a day. He does not seem to be pooping much. I have not seen anything for 2 days. Is this normal? He never had any problems before. He used to be on Science Diet Mature adult dry and canned.

Add water to his food and also you can try using miralax mixed in with the food.
you may also want to feed more frequently, two meals a day is not the greatest for balancing BG numbers.
If you are free feeding, that's OK though.

If he starts vomiting or becomes disinterested in food, plus not pooping, he could be obstructed.
In that case, he requires veterinary assistance, pronto.

The vets advise 1/4 to 1/8 teaspoon of miralax 2x a day in water plus lots of water. Racci is always constipated and finally went today after 2 days because of the stress of a vet visit and anal gland infection. She was starting to get regular on the miralax before all this stress. I'm just keeping her on the 1/4 tsp 2x daily because she's big. How big is your cat?

Oh how I learned about this on tues. It was a horrible experience! Baxter required a manual dig out. :o

Caryn, if he hasn't gone in 2 days I would consider taking him to the vet. Does his sides seem bloated? Does he have loss of appetite? Have you observed any straining on him trying to go? Have you looked at his booty to see if its pouching out or irritated? You want to catch it before it gets to late because it becomes very painful & stressful on the cat.

After you get this situtation figured out I would start adding lots of water to his food & Miralax. Water is very important. Miralax pulls water from the body to soften the stool. Therefor, making it easy for the cat to become dehydrated.

Hope this helps,
Jenn & Baxter

Ok I will check things out when I get home from work...Does this ever end? It's just seems like one thing after another.

I have been asking myself that question everyday lately.
I feel the same way. Baxter was DX in early nov. 3 wks later he was off insulin, then back on 3 weeks later. Had him at the vet for some vitamin blood work about 3 weeks ago. Then Thursday he was at the vet for symptoms of a UTI. BG higher then normal. Then Tuesday @ the vet again for the dig out. I feel like my life is in 3 week cycles with him. I just keep looking up & move forward.

Things will get better.

Do not push in Miralax if he seems obstructed - it won't go through and could make him very ill (per Dr Pierson, on a different post on this topic).

If Racci hadn't gone this morning before I woke up I would have taken her back to the vet. It's funny that she was never constipated on the dry food either. I guess there isn't as much fiber in the wet food, or maybe it's just the body adjusting to a new diet. She's drinking a lot of water, more than before! I would not wait more than the 3rd day. Make sure he isn't going somewhere else from stress though. Some cats do.

Caryn, is this the 3rd day or the end of the second day? I would give Powder the Miralax & lots of water today and get him to the vet if he hasn't gone by morning unless he is vomiting or has the other symptoms Jenn was mentioning. He should go to the vet right away in that case. Racci wouldn't eat much last night either but then again, would you eat if you were that constipated? I wouldn't! I sit with Racci and bring her food and water to the big ottoman where we're sitting together and encourage her to drink and eat that way. She's getting very spoiled but at least she's drinking lots of water and wet food (and miralax). Of course it's easier for me to work on it because I'm home all day, but do the best you can. I hope Powder goes.

Jenn, how is Baxter doing?

Powder went last night. Not a lot but he did go.. He is still eating a lot and drinking. I checked him all over and he seems ok. I am adding water to his food now. I am due to get him into the vet for his first visit after diagnosis. So I will be taking him in within the next few days. Thanks everyone!

Make sure you add a lot of water to his food.

It might take a little while for his body to adjust to insulin & for the drinking a lot & acting hungry to calm down.

You might want to keep him on 1/4 tsp of Miralax once or twice a day for a few days. I would do it twice since he's big while he's adjusting also. Just mix it with the extra water you're putting on his food. It has no taste or smell. I'm glad he went!
