Hello

So I have an 8-10yr old male netured diabetic cat or so I have been told by previous owner. Kitty's name is Marvin and his previous was going to put him to sleep if someone didn't take him cause he was moving out of the country. So I took him in and I think he is newly diagnosed however here is my question since I got him I have been home testing him which was never done before and I have never gotten a reading over 65 and he is not wanting to eat once in a while he will eat a few treats bit thats it and he is not drinking much at all if any which is unusual for a diabetic cat. As far as the vet the previous owner only had one sheet from the vet and it just said that he had glucose in his urine didn't see any bloodwork at all. So my question is could it be that maybe he isn't diabetic and something else is going on thats why he had sugar in his urine. Or because he isn't eating why his levels are only in the 60. Don't know what to do please help!!

This is very like the situation that was posted about on FDMB just recently - kitty to be euthanized because owner was leaving the country and a new home was found at the last minute. Kudos to you for taking him in! :)

A BG reading of 65 is in the normal range. Are you using a pet meter or a human meter? Either way, it's a good number. It might be worth taking him to your own vet for a complete exam to get baseline health data. It doesn't seem that you have much info from the previous owner.

Thanks so much for answering. I wasn't sure if 65 was ok cause I am not sure to such low numbers since my other diabetic cat is always in the 300 or higher sometimes. Yes I am going to take him into my vet to have him looked at am just concerned cause I can't get him to eat other than a few treats now and then.

The lack of appetite is concerning even if he isn't diabetic. I'm sure you're aware of the risk of hepatic lipidosis in cats who don't eat enough. You might need appetite stimulant meds and/or antinausea meds.

How long have you had him? Could he be in mourning for his previous life and not eating because he has the blues and his world is completely turned upside down?

It's very kind of you to take him in.

My other thought, and I don't know previous owner.....ssometimes it's easier to get special needs animals rehomed in a short turn around time than medically healthy animals. Could the owner have been playing on others sympathies? One of the shelter workers always says, "if only every cat had three legs or a sob story, there would be more more cats in this shelter."

Welcome to the board.
