In a diabetic cat what are the goals that you want to get to with the insulin? In otherwords what are the best numbers you want your cat to be at by giving them the shots of Lantus? I already know what a non diabetic should be at but what should is it that a diabetic cat should be at? And what are considered hypos?
I know you are numbers driven people thats exactly what I need.

Terri

With tight regulation, you look to have your cat in a normal BG range -- or as close to that as possible. We hope to get our cats in the 50 - 120 range.

As far as "hypo," it depends on what you mean. Many cats will dip their toes in low numbers. In order to earn a dose reduction, according to the Tight Regulation Protocol, numbers need to drop below 50 in a newly diagnosed cat. Many cats' numbers will drop lower than that for a brief period with no ill effects. Because we are numbers driven, we test. Testing is a means of keeping our cats safe. If numbers were to be below 40 for a substantial period, then it's possible that a cat may experience symptoms of hypoglycemia. Although, every cat is different and some cats have become symptomatic at higher numbers. We differentiate between low numbers and symptomatic hypoglycemia.

If you are following the tight regulation protocol you want to get the cat's BG levels into the normal range, or at least stable under 200. We treat cats that go below 50 w/ MC or HC carb food or Karo to get their numbers up to prevent hypos. Some cats don't show symptoms even much lower (ECID), but you need to keep them out of that range. For newly diagnosed cats <50 is a reduction in dose, for old timers it is three times <50 or once <40.
