Okay it has been a while since I have been on the boards. What is the difference between the two insulins? Did they stop making PZI?

PZI is still made using a compounded formula. Look up,"BCP PZI".
Prozinc is a recumbent human insulin designed for use in cats. It has a bit longer duration. (10-14 hours). It is a u40 type.

hey there, long time no see!

you guys used pzi by idexx before right? the one Dr. H preferred? if so, that one has been discontinued. but like carl said, the compounded version by bcp is still around. you might remember it as the one you could get a free sample of. prozinc is a newer pzi type insulin. it's similar to pzi in it's actions, not exactly alike, but similar. i haven't used it myself as we switched Mousie over to lantus when idexx's was discontinued. either choice is fine, especially if you want the flexibility that the old pzi offered. from what i've read and watched over the last few years i think prozinc requires alot more patience than we had to worry about with idexx's pzi as far as obtaining a goal but if it's going to work for your cat, you do get there. are you planning on doing Dr. H's TR protocol again?

PZI stands for Protamine Zinc Insulin. Protamine zinc is an additive that slows the absorption of the insulin.
PZI Vet used 90% bovine insulin and 10% porcine insulin
BCP PZI uses 100% bovine insulin
ProZinc uses 100% recombinant human insulin

Larry,
Thanks for the detailed explanation and for spelling "recombinant" correctly. I always spell it wrong, and the spell checker on the board says it's wrong no matter how you spell it!

According to the Prozinc site, the duration is 10-14 hours. PZI claims 81-10 hours. I am not aware of anyone on FDMB that uses the Dr. H TR protocol. There are one or two current PZI members who shoot TID, but not using that protocol. I don't know how well Prozinc would work on the TR protocol, guessing the shot/test timing would have to be adjusted to work with the longer duration?

Carl and Larry,

Glad to see you are up on your spelling:)

My question is why would they bring out a human recombinant insulin for felines? We already have Lantus and Levimir that work well. Why didn't they create a feline recombinant insulin if they were going to do the research to create a replacement for PZI.

When I look at the spreadsheets of people using ProZinc, I think to myself "why don't they switch to Lantus, or go to BCP PZI?"

As a long time human diabetic, I can tell you that switching from beef/pork to the RDNA insulins was not a pretty site. I thought it was just my experience. But, my sil who is an ICU nurse in Indianapolis, saw the fallout after the change. She confirmed that it did not go well for a lot of people.

In truth, I would like to see a Feline recombinant insulin. I've got 7 cats on insulin now - six on Lantus and one on Levimir.

I don't know that you can say one is "better" than another, just different. ECID and sometimes one works better than another. One big difference between PZI/Prozinc and the L's is that prozinc doesn't have a shed. You shoot it, it wears off and is gone.
