Hi. I will try to give you the short version of my story, then my questions.
Bubbles-15 yo, 14 lb,(about 3-4 lbs overweight) calico, diagnosed 09-04-13, BG 523 in vet's office (blood drawn 09-02-13), started that evening on 2u PZI every 12 hours, and changed food from Friskies dry to Fancy Feast Medley, and am gradually going to switch carbs down to Fancy Feast Classic. We are going back to vet to check BG, 09-13-13. Found this Forum, went to buy Relion and supplies today at Walmart...no lancets in stock for 2 weeks. She is still drinking a lot and urinating a lot. And now I can't check BG. Vet had said we could try to regulate without BG testing, but you guys have converted me!
I don't want to mess with the dosage because I don't know her BG. She is more alert at times, but she hasn't been very active for the past year, so it's difficult to tell if her BG is dropping. Not too many Walmarts near-by, and I work long hours, so I will try to find somewhere else to get supplies tomorrow. Should I switch her to the Classics now? And how long before the PZI will have effects and I see less drinking and urinating. She has been defecating outside the box since the urinary output increased approx 3-4 weeks ago. Since the change from dry to wet food, went from hard and formed to light brown, mushy and soft. (Sure wish she'd go In the box).
Thank you for your help!

Welcome! You can get lancets anywhere - they don't have to match the meter. The lancet holder just has to match the lancets. Be sure to get 25-27 gauge (the 30/31 gauge humans use are too small.)

I'd hold off on diet changes until you are testing. Food change can really impact numbers downward.

Glad we converted you.

I want to use the pen type, and the Walmart didn't have any spring loaded pens sold separately, because apparently the "pen" comes with the meter and that's why I needed the lancets to go with the Relion pen. My cat Does Not like to be touched so I want our first experience with BG testing to go as smoothly as possible. Should I use a different meter? And do you have any idea how many days on the PZI before I should see some changes?

Thank you!

OK, found my info in the PZI readings. Thank-you.
Peaks around 6 hours, and don't mess with the dose for at least 1 week.
So I guess I need to be patient.

Yes - go slow and low is the saying! :-D
I was also having issues with my WalMart not having things I need in stock. Sometimes I would have to travel great distances to other WalMarts in town just to get things I was out of! grr_red
Now what I do is order from the WalMart website. The website is never out of anything and it also saves a trip. I also use my Walmart credit card and I get free shipping right to my front door.
Hi and welcome!!

The caveat to that formula is - unless you get a preshot under 200. Then wait 20 minutes, without feeding and retest. You want a number that is over 200 and rising. Then skinny up you regular dose a bit

You're doing great! Someone wise once said this sugar dance is a marathon, not a sprint

Thanks for your help! I had to stay late at work...just got home...still giving 2u in am and 2u in pm. Bubbles is still drinking more than pre-diagnosis, but a little less urine today...this is the 6th day of insulin and Fancy Feast Medley, one can in the am and one can in the pm. Do you think I should start giving Fancy Feast Classic instead? I will try again for supplies tomorrow, feel in the dark not knowing her BG. :?

Sometimes, you can talk to the manager over the pet food section and tell them that you need X amount of whatever and arrange for it to be shipped to the store on a given day of the week.
