PZI dosing help

I can't figure out my spreadsheet so I have to give the information by hand here:

I started testing my cat myself last night. I tested him at 6:00 p.m. last night and it was 462. I gave him 2 units. I couldn't test him this morning because my monitor (that I just bought yesterday) fell on the floor and became faulty. I just did 2 units again in the am since he was high the night before. I retested again when I was able to buy a new monitor at 2:00 pm today and it was 276. I just tested now before his next dose and it is at 317. He ate some Fancy Feast today so I think that is why maybe his sugar is more controlled. I just put him on that diet.

Dosing recommendations for 317, and on wet low-carb diet? By the way, I have to give him his insulin a half-hour earlier because we are not going to be home at 6:00 p.m. tonight and won't get home until later.

I think I would give one unit a few cycles. ( We generally say to start at one unit and then increase as you get data) If you just started on the diet and the insulin, you need to give them time to work together. It is easy to increase as needed; it is difficult to deal with a cat who got too much insulin and is giving you very low numbers.

Until you get your spreadsheet up, you can do it this way:
4/5
pmps 462 2 units

4/6
amps 2 units
+8 276
pmps 317

Did you get my private message about helping with your spreadsheet?

I like the idea of a 1u dose with the new low carb food. Especially with that 107 at +4 the other day with higher carb food in the system!

Thanks guys! Did the 1 unit, so we'll see how that pans out.

Sue, I'm going to try some more on this spreadsheet, but if I can't get it to work, I'll definitely give you a call. I'd rather not bother you with this if I don't have to

When you're a newbie to diabetes, it can be stressful, but you're doing good. This forum has been amazing in helping with my cat Max. Like the others, I think the 1u is a good place to start, especially with the diet change. My cat Max's numbers really dropped when we he got him on the wet low carb diet. Keep us posted.

Your spreadsheet looks good. You can vary doses with PZI but you want to try to avoid changing too often. The dose needs a few cycles to settle. I am a little concerned with your dose this am. It will probably be fine, but try to get some tests in today. Try for +3 and definitely +6 so we can see how the insulin is working.

Thanks Sue,

I didn't see this post until just now. I just tested him at +7 hours. He is at 154.

So, if his sugar is back up to 400s again tonight, are you saying I should stick with the 1.5? No one is really ever available in the a.m. when I give the dose so I really have my own judgment to go by. Maybe you have some rules for me to live by so I can make better decisions with the dosings in the a.m.?

Also, how often do you guys feed the wet food? Twice a day, morning and evening? Or more?

You are getting some sharp drops. We would like to even that out. Sometimes it helps to feed overnight so your amps is not so high. Lots of people use an automatic feeder or put out frozen food. It is good to spread whatever food you are planning to feed during a cycle over the cycle, into several small meals.

Let's see what other numbers look like before you decide on an evening dose. He didn't seem to dip into dangerous numbers today at nadir.

Nice blue there at +7! I would test again at +9 or +10 so you can see when or if your kitty will start to rise from the low point and how quickly it happens. Its all about getting data to understand your kitty's pattern on prozinc right now! Looks like that low carb food is doing the trick!

Yes, nice blue! Like Kelly said, this first part is about gathering data through the testing to help you learn how the insulin works on Bradley. Dosing will get easier once you have more data. When I was a new (no too long ago so still am), I needed to post almost every day for dosing advice while I was learning. I'd get a number from a test and think now what, what does it mean. It's a process, but you're already learning and catching on. I work during the day so wasn't able to test a lot then, but I would always try to get a test or two in after the PM shot. Every little bit can help.
