Vegetable (GA)

Member Since 2015
Not even a week after we lose Vegetable one of our other civvies Beans I think has an upper respitory infection :(

Her poor eye was full of goopy stuff & her nose is dry & I cleaned some goopy stuff from there as well. I'm going to give her a steam tonight & keep cleaning the goopy eyes.

Any other suggestions I can try to help her with? I'll see how she is tomorrow & then decide if she needs to go to the vet.

And to make things even harder, the vet's office called this afternoon to say Vegetables ashes are ready to be picked up.

I feel like I can't catch a break!

I have one of my kitties that is prone to URIs because of feline herpes. I use L-Lysine in capsule form...500mg to start and 250mg twice a day while the URI is active. I also will use a vaporizer close by where he is most of the time, or a hot shower steaming up the bathroom and put him in here for 15 minutes at a time. I have also done nose aspiration with salt water if the congestion is very bad. When they are very stuffed they may not want to eat because they cannot smell, so I will syringe water and food if needed.

ETA If you see discoloured mucous or if the kitty is labouring to breathe then an antibiotic may be needed, Most UTIs are viral but if they don't improve in a couple of days with home care then a viist to the vet may be in order

:bighug::bighug::bighug: so sorry everything is happening all at once.

So far the goopy eyes are under control ehicj is good. I tried to get her to eat but she just kinda licked a little bit of good so I started syringe feeding her. I'm also sitting in the bathroom with the big water running in the shower. Hopefully the steam will help a little.

It's so unusual for Beans to not eat, we call her our little garbage can cause she eats everything including Jalapeño chips if you let her!

Looks like it's gonna be a long night of getting up to feed beans & make sure she's ok.

It's so unusual for Beans to not eat,

When a kitty is stuffed up they have no sense of smell. It is their sense of smell that gets them eating. When my food vacuum kitty had a bad URI a few years ago, he wouldn't eat or drink so I had to syringe feed him for a couple of days, until the congestion started to break. Use whatever the stinkiest food you have is...a bit of tuna might help.

Good luck with Beans :bighug:

I took in a feral 7 week old kitten with eye infections and pneumonia. I really thought she was going to die. After two nights at the vet she came home still in rough shape. At the vet they did nebulizer treatments... So I continued them at home. If you have a nebulizer try it. I put her in a carrier, and put a towel over it so it was closed up, then put the nebulizer tube in and steamed her up in there. I really helped. (She was also on antibiotic eye ointment and regulations antibiotics.)

She and her sister just celebrated their first birthday two days ago.

A vaporizer in the room with her could help too.

This is a pic of her at the hospital when she was feeling better (believe it or not). I was so excited to see her on her feet and sitting when I thought she was a goner. And of course a more recent pic.

@JanetNJ That's a great idea, thank you! Your kitties are so cute, and I see they love boxes as well :) Your little grey one looks like my Paws, he's one of the sweetest kitties I have ever had and the black one looks like Trouble, another super sweet kitty.

Today Beans and her brother Trouble aka Little Man turn 8! I guess when Beans is feeling better we will have to have a belated birthday party for them :D

If you have any other cats, you also want to start them on the L-lysine. URIs are contagious and this will help protect the other cats.

I also recommend taking your baby to the vet if it gets worse.

Poor Beans - being sick on your birthday is no fun. Give him extra hugs and kisses.

Beans is feeling better but tonight I notice she had some puss like discharge coming from her vagina. I'm sure it's pyometra so she's going to the vet tomorrow to be spayed.

I can't afford to take her to the emergency vet tonight, they charge me $169 just to walk in the door & if I had to get her spayed & antibiotics as well as pain meds I'm sure I'm looking at big $$$$. I love my cats very much but I just don't have that kind of money laying around so tonight I will give her some cipro & get her to the vet first thing tomorrow.

Any other suggestions on what I can do for her fir tonight?
