I have to share this, we are so happy. First I was wrong with her first bg, it was 369 not 300. After a week on the 1 unit of Lantus twice a day her bg is now 239. So she went from 369 to 239 in one week, the vet was very happy. Keeping her on the same dosage and wants to see her again in one week. He said whatever it is we're doing is right on track. So the low carb diet is really working. We are so HAPPY

Hi Jerry.
Have you managed to get any of your own tests yet?
I'm sure you may have read that bg readings at the vet can be as much as 100 points higher due to stress, so it's possible you may be in a range that could be dangerous to shoot insulin.
Not saying that is definitely the case, just a strong possibility.
That's why we test our kitty's at home. Plus it saves some money by not having the vet charge us for what we're already doing. You could start keeping a log of all Punkin's numbers and just share that with your vet when she/he wants to have a look at it.
If you look below my post, you will see a link that says Callie Mae's SS, you can click it and have a look. That's what we pretty much all use so we can all share our info with each other when we are stumped, have questions about dosing, things like that.

There's a thread about setting one up. I'll see if I can find it and link it here so you can find it quickly if you decide to do that.

ok, here it is

google has been a little wonky lately, so you may have to try it a couple times before it will load.

AMPS means am pre shot reading PMPS means pm pre shot reading
+1 thru +11 is how many hours past amps/pmps bg was checked.

It's pretty simple and quite handy. It's even color coded so you can just have a quick glance to see when Punkin is in the green, blue, yellow...so on and so forth. Makes it easy to spot curves, rebounds just everything really.

Let us know if you have any questions or need some tips on testing, treats, anything.
We're he to help you, :-D

OK welcome me to the vampire club, it's not too hard really. Ok I'm still new on the spread sheet but heres her blood.

Her shot was at 8:45 this morning, her vet was at 11:45 where she read 239 just now at 4:48 her bg is 253

So it looks like her +3 was 239 and her +8 is 253.

Good job on the testing, and yes, Welcome to the "vampire club"
Was the +8 reading the first one you got on Punkin?

How much insulin did she get?
Not trying to bombard you with questions, really I'm not, I just don't want to keep hammering you with info you may have already read. Did you look at the Lantus stick on "the shed" yet?

Yes my first test. A kind lady on another thread suggested clicking the lancet pen around her for a while until she got used to it, worked great she thinks it's a game

Lantus, 1unit twice a day. I've read everything regarding the Lantus and everything else I could find. You're refering too the "depot sheds"

Well, you're doing great.
I don't know anything about Lantus, other than it's different from PZI  ,
but important for all insulins types is BG checks. Try your best to get a reading before any shot, and if Punkin will allow it, try to get a check at +6 (6 hours past injection) to see where she's at at nadir (lowest point before going back up).
If you can get a few other checks in here or there, that would be great information to have also. See how Punkin handles the insulin, how low she goes, things of that nature.
No pressure, we're just fascinated by numbers...and it helps determine the best course of treatment. Someone may have already mentioned it, but you may want to pick up some ketodiastix so you can check Punkin for ketones. That's a road you don't want to travel. Or so I'm told. Ketones can lead to DKA. I have no personal experience with it, but many here have, and it's not fun.

Just remember to breath!
You're off to a great start.
((((hugs))))

Angela

Thanks for your patience with me and all your kind words of support, we are trying. In a day or so I'll have a spread sheet that rivals Google's. Lol

I'll get the stuff your recommended. I've already got more diabetic supplies than Liberty Medical

Even if it takes you time to get the spreadsheet going, that's fine - the important part is that you mastered home testing! and can now save yourself $$$ by not having to go to the vet all the time!

Congrats and welcome to the club.
