I've read the ingredients on the canned pumpkin and it's only pumpkin. I've been putting some in each meal probably less than teaspoon. Today oil went to buy more and read the nutrient label and it's states 4gsm sugar although that's per 1/2 cup. Even though it's not added sugar would it still make a difference?

So I got miralax since its sugar free. How much do I put in his food?

Someone here has a baby who likes nanners, sorry can't remember who. Well I saw them today in the grocery store and they also had the chili pepper catnip toy. So I got one for Smokey and he has it soaking wet from licking it.

Hi Paula when I gave Colin Miralax I was told 1/8 Tsp. Put in food and add water because it works by drawing water into the intestines

Sharon, once day? It's something I want to do daily like I was with the pumpkin. To prevent constipation. I put pumpkin small amount in all his in between shot meals.

For Miralax you use 1/8 tsp once a day. If the constipation is severe you can give it twice a day. You can also use Slippery Elm Bark Powder in the same dose as Miralax.

I was told as needed. I did it everyday for about a week, then started with pumpkin.
I don't know if you can give it continuously. There's also psyllium husk powder. It's the same thing that's in Metamucil, but get the plain without sugar or flavorings.

Smokey doesn't have it but I've been giving pumpkin daily to prevent it. But then I saw the sugar and thought miralax would be better as long as I can give it daily.

My Max has kidney disease. We us Miralax daily in the morning in food. The warning bad for kidneys is true for people not kitties. If your kitty not having problems pooping then there is no need for it.

Check out Feline Constipation for more than you ever wanted to know about the feline GI tract.
Thanks for that feline constipation site.there yes was more than I ever wanted to know about the feline GI tract but it cleared a lot of questions I had up.like why she barfed sometimes after a poop and other things.

From the relevant page on Dr Pierson's catinfo.org website:

The two treatments that will be discussed in this section are Miralax (or its generic equivalent) and soluble fiber (e.g., guar gum, pumpkin, and psyllium).

  • Miralax increases fecal water content without increasing bulk/diameter. It is a laxative (made for humans) that can be found at pharmacies and some grocery stores.

  • Soluble fiber increases fecal water content but also increases bulk. Soluble fiber (versus insoluble fiber) may also play a beneficial role in intestinal health since it is fermented to short chain fatty acids which nourish the cells of the colon and also promote healthy bacteria.
Both treatments can be used at the same time (usually my preference) but the dosage of each is determined on a case-by-case basis.
