Hi. I was just wondering if anyone has a link of where to buy tinned pumpkin that helps cats runny tummies in the UK? Supermarkets or online - either are good.

This was discussed in the FB group today!
Two members have found canned pumpkin in the International/World food sections of Tesco and Sainsbury's. Waitrose sometimes stock it also.

But you can also cook a little fresh squash or pumpkin and mash/sieve it, then freeze in ice cube trays so you can thaw what you need as you need it (you can freeze the left-over canned stuff also).

Hi,

I would like to know something, but I fear that only somebody speaking French can help me:
When you speak about pumpkin for cat, are you speaking about "citrouille" or about "potimaron"?

Je croix qu'il est citrouille, Sophie (pour 'Halloween').

Thanks Eliz. I just found the FB discussion. Silly question, but how do they eat it? Do they eat it as it is or do you mix it with food?

Some here have also used other yellow/orange-fleshed winter squashes such as 'Hubbard', 'Butternut', etc.
But be aware that these make rather rubbish Halloween lanterns! :D
.

There are so many translations for the simple word "pumpkin" : I wonder if it would not be easier to use the Latin name...
It's nearly impossible to find the "true" pumpkin here (the original one, used to make lanterns), but quite easy to find winter squash (latin : cucurbita maxima). I have found frozen bits of winter squash in the frozen food shop down the road from me.

I used to defrost one bit, and gave a really small amount (1/8 tea spoon per day) mixed to my cat's meal, but I have noticed that he has a painful tummy when eating it.

So now, I use psyllium for constipation, and it seems to work.

I use fresh pumpkin or squash when it is in season....I find butternut to be the easiest for me to mash, although others ones will work as well. I remove the "guts", cut into slices (with the peel) and bake it at 350 degrees for about 35-45 minutes or until a fork goes through it easily. Then I remove the fleshy part, mash and puree it and freeze it in small storage containers that hold about the equivalent of 2 ice cubes. For my Tuxie I just give him a spoonful, with a little broth and mix his vitamins/supplements in with it. HE thinks it is a great treat and would eat as much as I would give him. Maxie is not as fond of pumpkin/squash on its own so I mix a little into her food as necessary. She usually is fine without it, but Tuxie needs it every day.

If you have the space, you could always grow one or two vines. I'd plant "pie pumpkin" seeds rather than the big jack o'lanterns used for Hallowe'en. They take up less space, more tasty and less fibrous. It's coming up to pumpkin season. Grab a pumpkin from the grocery store and dry out the seeds to plant next spring. This time next year, you'll have more pumpkin than you know what to do with.

That is what I do Red. And pumpkins or winter squash will last a fair bit of time if undamaged and stored in a cool dark place.

Good for you. By chance, I used to have vines growing around my compost bin. Unfortunately, squirrels and raccoons thought they had first dibs on everything, and skunks would turn them over, looking for grubs. The kids would be in tears. Both Rover and another cat with motility issues would never touch frozen pumpkin.
