One of our civvies has a very bad case of diarrhea and has also thrown up. We believe this is due to our having made the mistake of feeding too much of a variety of canned food. Ivan weighs about 13 lbs and is on a daily dose of Furosimde and Enalapril for his cardiomyopathy which he was diagnosed with in July of this year. We've also been giving him mirtazapine to help with his appetite which has appeared to help immensely with no noted issues from this med.

I believe I've seen posts where pumpkin has been suggested for both diarrhea and hard stools. Is this the case or am I mistaken? Should I give him pumpkin or something else for his diarrhea and if so how much?

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I like to use slippery elm bark syrup. It's very soothing and nutritive and helps diarrhea and constipation.

You can buy the pure bulk powder at a health food store. Don't get much....1/8 cup is more then enough until you determine if it works. Mix 1 tsp of SEB powder into 1/2 cup water. Whisk gently. Warm over low heat in a glass, stainless, or porcelain pan until just slightly thicker. It won't be really thick but just a bit more than when you started. Let it cool. Store it in a glass jar in frig. Give him 5 mls bid separated from any meds. Either give the SEB powder one hour before or two hours after meds. This keeps in the frig for one week.

If you don't want to try that, I've also used Beechnut baby food stage 2 homestyle squash. My cats won't eat pumpkin and the baby food comes in small jars. Give one tsp bid.

The other option is a probiotic. FortiFlora is available online. A human probiotic, Pearls, is a tiny, cat-sized pill. There's also ReNew Ultimate which is a more powerful probiotic. You use 1/3 of a capsule x2/day. It's available at Whole Food, GNC and other places.

When I posted about Zeke having hard stools I was advised that squash or pumpkin would be helpful. So pumpkin can be used for both diarrhea and hard stools? That seems odd - seems like it should be one or the other scenario but not both. Is it the same with the squash?
