Pumpkin + Diabetes

I wanted to share an experience I had just in case it might help someone else out in the future.

In the past, when my kitty has had any digestive upset (diarrhea, vomiting or "lack of movement") I would give him a little pumpkin purée. Pumpkin is has beneficial fiber that can help "regulate" digestion in cats, much like psyllium husk powder (used for both humans and cats). Just 100% organic canned pumpkin, no other additives (usually found in the baking aisle). At first kitty wasn't a fan but I really talked it up calling it a "treat" and I put it on my finger and presented it to him and THEN he became interested, licking it up.

My kitty recently had an upset (I believe due to sudden diet change) and now that he has diabetes I am concerned about giving him ANYTHING outside of his routine, especially something with carbs/sugar. I researched but did not find much. :nailbiting:

I decided to give him about 1 tablespoon mixed in with AM food and 1 tablespoon mixed in with PM food (Fancy Feast Classic wet food).

I did not notice any rise in glucose AT ALL with home testing, and he was back to normal right away.

It's also important to note this is MY experience. Yours could be completely different. I am not a vet. ;)

Thank you for sharing your experience! You never know when you may have information that could be helpful to others! Lots of folks here use pumpkin and have had great success with it. I have a kitty with IBD and I'm going to try pumpkin with her, hope it helps her!

I give my sugar cat 1 tbsp. in every meal too and I do exactly what Chris says in her post with the ice cube trays. I keep about 4 days worth in the fridge in Tupperware and then can replenish from the frozen ones in a freezer bag . Actually, I am giving all my animals pumpkin in their meals. It is a wonderful thing. Thanks for sharing. :bighug:

You know, I think I just decided I'm going to continue giving it with every meal like you do.

It doesn't seem to upset anything. On the contrary, he's needed less insulin and his number have been more normal since he started eating the pumpkin.

Of course, it could be totally unrelated to the pumpkin...Or, maybe it could have something to do with the fiber?
