We finally put our kitty on insulin. She has trace amounts of ketones so it was time, especially after our little visit to the emergency vet due to her UTI the other day. So we got her Prozinc. But here's my dilemma: her glucose has ranged from the lowest we've seen at 171, to the highest being 389. The vet wants us to start out with 2 units every 12 hours. But isn't that much? I was thinking maybe to start off with 1 unit every 12 hours. We got the insulin a couple days ago but we are waiting to start tomorrow so we will be home all day to monitor and test her blood. What would you recommend for dosage? She weighs 11-12 pounds, it varies with every scale we have used.

Prozinc is a good insulin for kitties and many do very well on it. I do not use Prozinc so I couldn't help you out with dosing. Your best bet would be to post on the Prozinc forum. It is a smaller community than the Lantus/Levemir forum but there are some very experienced people there that can help with dosing. This is the link to the Prozinc forum:

If your kitty has had ketones in the past it would be a good idea to get some ketodiastix so that you can test the urine for ketones.

They should be available at most pharmacies.

That is great that you will be home testing. That is the safest way to keep track of glucose numbers. You should set up a spreadsheet so that you can record the data you get. This shows a good picture on how well the insulin is working and how low the dose is taking her. Instructions for setting up a spreadsheet are here:

If you have any trouble getting it set up ( I sure did ;)) just ask for help and one of the spreadsheet gurus can help you out.

It would also be helpful if you could add a few bits of information to your signature....type of meter you are using, type of food you are feeding.

Once you get posting on the Prozinc forum you can get some help with setting up the dosing.
