Ok... today's the day. We're going to attempt switching from Humulin R to ProZinc this weekend.

Based on Tink's SS below, does the vet's recommendation of starting out with 1u sound like the right thing? I just ask because this vet seems to have limited experience with FD. He was not in support of home testing and was going to just issue a blanket dose of 1.5u every 6hrs on the Humulin R. I've been testing before every shot and at nadir when I can, and there are days (especially the last few) where 1.5 would DEFINITELY send him into hypo territory. Now that I'm home and actually DOING the testing, and adjusting the dosage effectively, the vet seems more comfortable with it... but I still question his knowledge.

So yeah... for those using ProZinc, given Tink's numbers... does a 1u dose sound safe to start with?

We did try ProZinc during Tink's 11 day hospitilization for DKA & hepatic lipidosis... it was completely ineffective. However he's doing SO much better now that I'm hoping it will work this time. Just want to make sure the vet's recommendation isn't likely to send him into hypo.

The general rule is start out low and slow. So starting with 1 unit is a small amount to be shooting. Personally I think that you are doing the right thing by testing before you shoot. That is just my opinion. There are others here with much more experience with the dosing than I am and Im sure that they will see your thread and help you more than I can or you can PM
Sue and Oliver (GA) or Simon'sMommy.

I would start with the 1u and test before every shot, PZI will let you adjust the dose within a certain
degree. You also need to test for ketones especially because of the DKA. Why do you say the hospitalization
was useless? You can't treat DKA at home. PZI will last longer than the R, it amazes me vets still use R
as the main insulin. You will do fine .... ketones are important to know after a DKA.

One unit sounds good to me. But as Nancy said, check for ketones daily as he has been a DKA kitty. And post with your numbers. If he doesn't respond within a cycle or so, you may want to up the dose. Pretty quickly. We'll watch for you. :-D

I agree. Will you be able to do some tests during the day over the weekend and post them to Tink's ss? Say +3, +5, +7 ? Those numbers will let us all see how the ProZinc is working between AMPS and PMPS.

We will be watching for your posts.

BTW....glad to see that Tink is eating on his own. :-D

The ProZProZincworking!!! :-) Started it last night at 1u. Two hours later his bg was lower. I'll post to ss on Monday...only have my phone at home. He's been eating quite a bit last night and today. Today at 3+ he was at 86, but ate some low carb for me. Just now at 5+ he's at 152. Only gave him .75u this morning as his bg was 226 (I did syringe feed before the shot, after testing).

He was super playful last night and this morning too... first time in months... so I think he's feeling pretty good!!

Excellent news :thumbup

I like the reduction. That was an early fast drop for ProZinc. The food was a perfect idea and helped him go back up. We would have been worried if he continued on down to nadir after the 86.

Hooray! How wonderful it is working and so glad he is feeling better!

My Sammy started out on Prozinc and we started on .5u. Then up to 1 unit and since that didn't seem to be working I got brave and had him up to 2 units. We did adjust back down to 1 unit. I never did get Sam regulated at all either on the Prozinc or the Lantus. Good luck with that, seems to be working. :thumbup

So glad Tink is feeling better and the ProZinc is working. Great job you are doing Jen.

I'm so glad you are seeing a response to the insulin, don't forget to check for ketones it is really
important in a cat who has been DKA ..... you are doing really well.

Can y'all look at his ss again. It's been over 24 hrs since his last shot and his numbers are holding steady, even after syringing a/d, which normally spikes it pretty quick. He's been eating low carb frequently, but not in huge qty. Maybe 3/4 of a 5.5oz can yesterday. I only syringed once yesterday since he was eating frequently. This is making me wonder if diet alone will be enough soon...

I was syringing 1/3 can of a/d four times a day, but only did that once yesterday since he was pretty interested in food. However by the end of the day he'd eaten less than a full can of Wellness. I syringed once today and will do more later just to keep the calories up.

He's looking good, Jen! As a reference, generally cats are considered in remission when they range between 40-120 without insulin. He's a little higher than that, but because he is just getting acclimated to the food and not eating it solely, I think I'd give it a while. If he sneaks up above 200 for preshot, you might shoot .25 (yes, it's hard to eyeball but we can help)

The general rule is on 5.5 or 6 once can a day.

Wal-Mart finally had ketone strips. They were sold out for over a week!! Anyway, just caught him using the box and was able to get in direct stream. Negative!!! Yay!!
