I’ve been increasingly frustrated with Prozinc recently. Spot is on his highest dose yet but we can’t seem to find the sweet spot anymore. The current dose was taking him into hypo numbers a little over a week ago and now we’re getting no action at all.. and this seems to be a pattern with him every time we increase.

Today I brought up switching to Lantus with the vet. I’ve been thinking about this for a little while now, and after a year on Prozinc, no one can say I gave up too soon! But I think it’s time to throw in the towel. Looking over all the stickies, I think I’m going to go with TR and hope that we can start seeing some consistency.

Any advice from previous switchers?

Go for it! Some kitties do better on Levemir - flatter, longer duration, etc. Teasel wasn't one of them. I think the depot action of Lantus is stronger for Teasel but he remains a bouncy and unpredictable cat.:)

Did you consider Levemir? Here's an older post I found interesting: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/why-is-lantus-so-much-more-popular-than-levemir.195958/

I love it. It has been wonderful for Mia!
I asked the vet about Levemir also. We went with Lantus because she had no experience prescribing Levemir, and for some reason I was under the impression it was only better for higher dose kitties so I didn’t push. Thank you for this link. I didn’t realize Lev was so highly thought of! :bookworm::)

My vet knew nothing at all about Levemir. I had been debating on changing Mia's insulin for awhile, so I had done a lot of research on both Lantus and Levemir. When I was taking her to an internal medicine specialist, I had also discussed it with him. He ended up leaving to do national consulting, so I went back to the vet I had used for years but had not been to in about 6 years. When I told her I wanted to switch to Levemir, she went in the back and did some quick research just to confirm that it was being prescribed with success to cats, then she gave me a prescription. It has been wonderful for Mia. I suggested to the vet trying it as the first insulin for any diabetics from now on.
