Prozinc shortage

Since Prozinc is on backorder nationwide, my vet wants to put my Sammy on Humulin temporarily. I've been going to her for years and trust her implicitly, but it's 2 months since his diagnosis and we finally got his numbers just right on the Prozinc. I'm a little worried about switching him to something different at this stage, even if it's only temporary. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi Sophie
I'm new to these boards so thanks so much for the info!
Sammy's always been such a sensitive little guy & I do tend to worry. I will call Doc today & ask about PZI.
Blessings to you & yours! ;-)

i agree. talk to your vet about the compounded pzi's. some vets don't like the idea of compounded insulins but if yours is one, just tell them it's short term and it would be better than going backwards to humulin.

you could always suggest lantus or levemir too but if your vet wants to go to humulin, they probably don't even know about lantus and levemir for cats

I agree- Humulin would be a step BACKWARDS, not forwards.

Switching to a long-term insulin such as Lev or Lantus would be far better.

Thanks everybody! I got a call from the pharmacy this evening saying my doc had called in the Rx, but I haven't filled it yet, as I had to work late. I have enough Prozinc to last for a few more days so I'm going to call her tomorrow & ask about these other options. Since I haven't filled the Rx, I figure no harm, no foul - not too late to call in something different. What I can't understand is how could she not have heard of Lantus & Lev? I though they were pretty well-known types of insulin...I'm curious to know why she thinks Humulin is the better option. confused_cat

My cat was on Lantus before Prozinc. There has been a lot of research that said the Lantus or Glargine as they also call it could help their diabetes go into remission. It was a miserable failure for my cat. New research shows Hunilin N as a much better alternative to Lantus. The problem there I that cats will do very well on it for a few week and then develop antibodies causing it not tO be as effective and requiring many adjustments. I think that you need to decide what you are most comfortable with. All of the vets in my area actually got together to develop a plan. They all agreed that the research shows Humulin N is the best alternative. I would be very interested to know how the compounded PZI worked of you decide to use it. I am thinking about this after seeing this post. My kitty has been on insulin for 6 years and is doing great on the Prozinc. Good luck!! I just hope that they fix this shortage soon.

I would be very interested to see any research that shows that Humulin N works for cats. I don't believe anyone here is familiar with any new research being done on it, but if you can get some documentation or some links from your vets, please share them. I don't believe there is any case of it working better than Lantus, Levemir or Prozinc with people or cats here, but I've only been around for a little over a year. Is there some new protocol for its use that we don't know about?

My cat was on compounded PZI for about 10 weeks before going into remission. The problem with compounded PZI is consistency of quality, so you have to make sure you get it from a reliable supplier. Mine was supplied by Veterinary Pharmacies of America (VPA) in Houston TX, but I don't believe they still sell it. The most common source is "BCP" which is also based in Texas.

I am with Carl- I don't know of any research that says it is better and I do know of a few that says it isn't the best.

Ask for the articles from your vet so that you can read them as well. Are they older than 2006? Remember, these are also the same people who blindly follow along (and take the commission) for handing out dry food to diabetic cats b/c it happens to have the words "Diabetic" on the label so they might not really be up to doing their own research when they have plenty of other things to learn about for rabbits, birds, snakes, and mice.

Really? Humulin is better than Lantus? Please provide the proof, and can you please provide your cat's BG numbers along with the dosing you have been using for your cat that shows your cat is doing great?

The links to this 'new research' will be sufficient.

thanks
