I may have asked this before. I can't remember. I don't really want to deal with this right now, but it seems I finally have to. Funds are a BIG concern, with all of our other huge pet expenses lately. Does anyone have thoughts on Prozinc or Vetsulin? It's decision time. Lantus is out of reach for me. THank you all again

Actually, Lantus and ProZinc are comparable in price because ProZinc is a U40 insulin (which means a 10ml bottle has 400 units) where Lantus is a U100 insulin, so a 10ml bottle has 1000 units

A lot of us are buying Lantus from Canada...there's information on where in the last post in this "Insulin from Canadian Pharmacies" thread

That being said, if your choices are only ProZinc and Vetsulin, the ProZinc is a much better insulin for cats. It's more gentle and longer acting than Vetsulin is

Someone referred me to valleyvet, so that is where I will make my purchase. It has free overnight shipping and great reviews. Just not sure which to get.

I use Vetsulin and don't recommend it, unless it's your only choice. It can be very hard on your kitty, and IMHO is difficult to regulate your kitty with. It's only merit is that it is cheaper, but the others are worth the extra $$!

Definitely Prozinc instead of Vetsulin. But @Chris & China, what about PZI BCP? I don't know much about it but I think it's supposed to be comparable to Prozinc in terms of effectiveness and duration, but a little cheaper. Is that right? I know @Larry and Kitties has used it. I don't know where to get PZI though.

Yes, BCP PZI is comparable to ProZinc and I've read here that BCP PZI might be a little cheaper than ProZinc, but again, it's a U40 insulin, so you have to take the price you pay times 2.5 to really compare the price against Lantus

I've also read that since BCP PZI has to be compounded, each vial can be a little different from the last vial

Well, I think I remember people saying Prozinc after I thought about it. I went ahead and ordered it from valleyvet. shipping is not free for me in Florida. It's $20.00. If the cost becomes too expensive, then I will have to downgrade to vetsulin, but for now I'm trying my best with Prozinc.

You can order BCP PZI in either U40 or U100. When I last ordere 100U BCP in the spring I paid almost $100 for 10 ml and that included shipping

You can have your vet fax in the Rx, then pay BCP directly - no vet markup that way.

I bought prozinc for $94.00 + $20 shipping from Valleyvet.com and I bought the needles there too, since I'm in a hurry to get them. I reeeeeeeally can not afford this right now :( My hubby's cat Scully is very ill as well and who knows. So stressful and upsetting. I don't know if I should treat Brandy for diabetes and also try to find her a home in the meantime. I don't know what to do. It's just one of those overwhelmed days. She's just so cute (unless she gets grouchy at times lol). My Mom sent me flowers to cheer me up about my Molly that passed on Friday and I walked outside for a second and Brandy was inspecting the flowers. She looks so funny - like a statue all innocent when I came back inside. There were a few petals knocked off, but she looked at me like Whhooo Meee?

How precious, and your mom sounds like a very sweet woman. Good luck with all that is going on with you and your fur babies. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Glad you are now set with insulin and needles. If you haven't seen it, we have a protocol for ProZinc. It is in my signature in blue.

Now to get you set up with a spreadsheet so you and your vet can keep track of his progress and so we can see his history if you want dosing help. Here are the instructions.

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

It's a little tricky so if you need help, just click on my picture and start a conversation.

We have a forum for ProZinc users:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/prozinc-pzi.24/

It's a good place to get dosing advice when you need it as everyone there uses or has used your insulin. It may be helpful to read through the threads and check out people's spreadsheets to see how they are doing.

thank you. my brain can not handle spreadsheets right now. I am starting this day by day. I will look into it when things calm down a bit for me. THank you so much for the info!

Brandy looks like such a sweetie! And your Mom's flowers are so thoughtful and lovely. So, so sorry about your beloved Molly.
I don't know if I should treat Brandy for diabetes and also try to find her a home in the meantime
Are you considering keeping Brandy, or are you definitely just fostering until you can find her a forever home? If you know you are not going to keep her I would suggest continuing to look for a home for her while you treat her, just make sure any potential adopters know and understand that she is diabetic and needs insulin.

I felt the same way about the spreadsheet when I first joined! And then I had all sorts of problems getting it set up so I could use it (I am definitely not good with that kind of thing!). Several people here helped me get it sorted out, and it has since become one of the most valuable tools I have for dealing with this disease! I do strongly recommend you get one set up, it isn't nearly as overwhelming as it sounds (and as I was convinced it would be!) and it is such a huge help! Trust me, you will be glad to have it!

Sending hugs for you and chin scritches for Brandy and Scully! :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat: :cat:

I don't know what I'm considering. My head is spinning a little sometimes. I don't want to give her away, but I with all the other problems in our house right now I don't know which way to go. I would need to find someone who understands the care of a diabetic cat and the expense as well. I didn't adopt her to just foster her, but I also didn't know she had diabetes. I am venting basically. If I could hit the lotto and hire someone to watch her, that might help...but.....

I can well understand your need to vent! You definitely have a lot on your plate right now. If you feel unable to care for a diabetic cat long-term then you should probably start looking for someone who understands feline diabetes and will take Brandy. On the other hand, if you're ready to make that kind of commitment, you know she already has a loving home with someone who will do everything possible for her. Less than two months after I adopted my baby Bengal, she was diagnosed with IBD; I was definitely not prepared to deal with that, on top of my diabetic kitty, and serious anxiety and behavioral issues with my adult Bengal. I had to do a lot of soul-searching to make sure that keeping her was ultimately going to be in the best interests of all concerned. I decided to keep her; she's sweet and lovable (although she makes me crazy sometimes, she has no "off" switch and is constantly into everything, and sometimes exacerbates my older Bengal's anxiety) and I adopted her with the intention to keep her; it's not her fault she has this illness. But just like every cat is different, so is every owner, and I know you want to do what is best for Brandy.

Yes, it would be wonderful to hit the lotto, wouldn't it?!? Then we'd never have to worry about being able to care for our beloved furbabies!!! Sending hugs and scritches! :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat: :cat:

Yes, the lotto would DEF be nice. Well, I don't know if I'll be able to care for her long term or not. It's a tough call to even think about. Also, even if I did make that hard choice, we all know that virtually no one wants a diabetic kitty. She follows me all around the house. Just thinking of it makes me feel so guilty. I know it's not the same as putting a kitty to sleep, but it's a tough decision just like that one. I know I have to be realistic with our schedule/ timing of injections as well. I don't know how you all manage. We're basically tied down to the kitty's injection schedule. It's tough.

my brain can not handle spreadsheets right now.

Understanding the spreadsheet/grid:

The colored headings at the top are the ranges of glucose values. They are color-coded to clue you in as to meaning.

Each day is 1 row. Each column stores different data for the day.

From left to right, you enter
the Date in the first column
the AMPS (morning, pre-shot, test) in the 2nd column
the Units given (turquoise column)

Then, there are 11 columns labeled +1 through +11
If you test at +5 (5 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +5 column
If you test at +7 (7 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +7 column
and so on.

Halfway across the page is the column for PMPS (evening, pre-shot, test)
To the right is another turquoise column for Units given at the evening shot.

There is second set of columns labeled +1 through +11
If you snag a before bed test at +3, you enter the test number in the +3 column.

We separate day and night numbers like that because many cats go lower at night.

The nadir is the lowest glucose between shots. There is a general period when it will happen which is specific to the insulin being used and testing then helps make sure your cat doesn't go too low.

It is merely a grid for storing the info; no math required.

It is tough, you're right. But somehow you manage, don't ask me how, lol, it just kind of seems to happen! It gets easier the longer you deal with it, you fall into a rhythm that works for you, I guess. Sounds like Brandy is very attached to you! I know that makes it harder, if you decide you can't keep her. I hope you can come to decision that suits everyone and provides the best chances for Brandy.

Brandy is so cute! I'd have a hard time giving her up. Keep a log of her BG #'s till someone helps get the spreadsheet set up for you. It is overwhelming; you've got a lot going on at one time and the past week was a very difficult one for you. Take it one step, one day at a time. Already you're headed in the right direction with getting Brandy on Prozinc. If the cost of an insulin becomes an issue, we can give you links to organizations that may be able to help you. It will get easier.

Thank you for giving her that chance! She will reward you for that by giving you her 100% unconditional love. :bighug: Cat Ma is right, one step, one day at a time. It really will get easier, it's just so overwhelming at the start, I know, but hang in there, you've got a lot of help here at FDMB. :):)

Yes one day at a time. I could have not taken Smokey my parents cat. But then I thought who is going to put up with all his behavior issues (which are now resolved) and his diabetes. I would wonder constantly if he would be cared for enough and we'll treated. A civvie I had years ago who turned nasty when another entered our house would have been adopted in no time at all. But I would always wonder if she was okay. And that i couldn't live with, the not knowing on how she was being treated. She also had a bond with another I had. Fred would have been lost without her. They departed within weeks of each other.

I love the picture of Brandy next to the flowers!

When Marshmallow was really sick and I didn't know how to handle it, I kept telling myself, "one paw at a time, one paw in front of the other." I had a bunch of different treatment options and I asked the vet what to try in what order and I just did one thing at a time. It helped keep me calm to keep saying that when I was stressed because I knew she wasn't doing well, and it also helped me keep a handle on what I was doing. Take things one day at a time and it stops feeling quite so overwhelming. Then one day you look back and you're amazed at how much you've learned and accomplished. :) Hang in there, we're all here if you ever need help or advice or just want to vent.

@smiley747 Let us know how the vet visit went. If you're not yet home testing, ask a tech to show you how, if you can. I learned better from videos and tips here but having the tech show me helped, too.

Okay. I do home test, just not constantly because I can't and she really hates it, but I do test

Good that you're home testing. CJ hated it at first, too. She used to make me chase after her. Now she sits and waits to be poked! The key is to make it fun for Brandy. Sing and give heaps of praises plus a low-carb treat. You'll find what works. Let us know if you need more tips. It does get easier!

No she didnt mind at first. After about 12 times, she now HATES it. She reallly really struggles. I even have an open can of food to distract her. she hears the zipper on the testing pouch and she knows what's coming. but I will monitor her as much as I can for sure.

I keep the meter in a bag instead of in the pouch. Maybe that would help Brandy? CJ was really squirmy with everything at first, even when I'd take the cap off a tube of polysporin.

Try letting the first sound she hears you shaking the bag of her favorite treats. Then after she comes and gets where you want her, I give a treat and then sneak attach!
