Hi I'm new.

My cat "Joey" new diabetic kitty, he lost 8 pounds ( was 18#) before we figured it out.
Now it's a slow process, any suggestions to help him gain back some pounds. I think it
will help him health wise.

Hi Mary and Joey,

Sorry your kitty is diabetic, but glad you are here! We have a very successful protocol: a mild long lasting insulin(which ProZinc is, so check off one :-D ), wet low carb food (a vet explains why here http://www.catinfo.org) and testing at home.

We test our cats before we give each shot and midcycle, to see how low the insulin takes him. And if you change food, be sure you are testing first. When we switched our kitty from dry to wet, he went down 100 points overnight. If we had not tested and had given him his regular dose, he would have hypoed.

The best way to get the weight back on is to get him regulated on the insulin so his body is able to process the food effectively. It is not able to absorb the nutrients efficiently while he is unregulated, so feeding a little more than usual may be a good idea. You can also feed foods that are low in carbs but higher in calories. (on the catinfo site, she has a food chart) And it might help to give him several small meals a day.

Here is the protocol for ProZinc:
