Tyler has the wobbly legs and plantigrade stance. It's one of the two symptoms that found me this amazing forum. That the vet banged on about pain meds rather than BG control.

Anyway. Ty's back leg hocks both show signs of pressure and soreness. Is there anything I can give to help this.
Obviously I am hoping this all improves if the BG and diet becomes right for Ty. He really has lost quite some muscle mass although has maintained a 5kg weight mainly through fat likely due to the dry renal diet.
 
Some form of methylcobalamin can be helpful for the diabetic neuropathy. People here in the US use Zobaline, but I'm not sure you have that available in New Zealand.

I used liquid methylcobalamin compounded at a pharmacy when Wink needed some help. It was injections, not an oral pill. Don't remember the formulation. Wink was walking entirely on his hocks when I first got him from the shelter and he could only take a few steps before he stopped from the pain. Getting his BG levels not simply regulated but back to normal range for cats helped immensely also.

Knew he was better as he started to be able to negotiate the stairs better but within a month or so, he was eyeing jumps to the tops of the 6 foot tall bookcases. He walked better, more up on his toes, although he never got so he was walking on his tippy toes like my other cats.

Yes. I'm giving him 2mg methylcobalamin a day with a thought for his CKD. It's not Zobaline

I was thinking more of something I could gently rub onto the sore areas to help.
 
Noah has transdermal BUPE from a compounding pharmacy, he absolutely hated the taste of the oral and hated me for giving it to him.
That's an option only if methylcobalamin can be "pasted" and applied the way you want or if the pain gets bad enough for BUPE.
A lot of people seem to have never heard of that so remember, transdermal BUPE = Noah.
Would heat be good or make things worse? I know I shouldn't put heat on my back but I'm addicted to heating pads. You could put a towel over the pad and start at the lowest level. We plugged in Zoe like that when she was birthing in a tiny closet.
 
Renal diets are low in protein and cause muscle wastage in CRD cats. I would get him onto a high protein, low carb diet to build up the muscle in his legs.
 
You are doing a great job with Tyler.
I noticed on the L and L forum that Tyler dropped to 59 this evening at +3. Is he still having 2 units? Nothing is written in the dose column for the PMPS today. The change over to low carb food is probably contributing to the lower BSLs.

Oops. Yes. It is still all 2.00 units which the vet set.
Trying to get the carbs down but going slowly to not give his body a shock.
 
There are a bunch of neuropathy threads. I know you are having diet challenges with Tyler. There are 2 keys to recovery:
- B12
- regulated blood glucose

I posted in several threads recently. Leo was almost ready to be put down, he could hardly walk. After 3-4 months of the above, he mostly recovered. Six months later he was 90%. Now, one year later it is like the neuropathy never happened. Really it is a miracle to see the recovery. And it makes us to happy we spent the time and energy on his recovery!

I'm oscillating a lot with the B12methyl dose. I want to give a full wham of 3mg but am concerned for the loading on his CKD II kidneys.

Love the term 'diet challenges'. I feel that until I get this diet regulated to be the same day in day out , then the BG even on a rigid 2units will just continue up and down at whim. Only thing is at least I am testing and learning. Can now know when BG maybe is too low + even with the little I have done those carbs are down.
 
No problem. You could always reduce the B12 dose. Some is better than none.

My understanding of neuropathy is that the neural sheaths (surrounding the nerves) degrade. B12 contributes to the direct health of the neural sheaths. Regulation will allow B12 to be absorbed, and contribute to the regrowth of the neural sheaths. So high blood glucose over time is bad, and neuropathy is one of the bad side effects.
