I am not sure if the rules change from state to state, but here in Ohio (at least SW) a prescription is required by all pharmacies (CVS, WALGREENS, KROGER) in order for me to get either one. i would be interested to know if it is different between each state.

I know that in "the thumb" in MI, lantus is prescription only, but we buy our syringes from wal mart with no problem. $12.44 I believe for a box.

In CT to pick up a box of syringes I need a script. Script also for the insulin we use, but I can get some humulin insulin without a script if I ever needed it.

We buy our syringes online form Hocks.com using the link at the top of the page. No script necessary, great price and this message board gets a commission so that we can help the website owner continue to help all of us.

All states require a script for "analog" insulins. Those include Lantus, Levemir, and short acting ones like Humalog. For other insulins like N or R, it varies by state. Each state has its own requirements for syringes and some localities even have more restrictive requirements than the states' requirements. You can usully oder syringes over the internet without a script. Hock's (upper left) is one of those.

here a state by state breakdown:

No prescription needed for insulin (Lantus) or syringes in Ontario, Canada.
The syringes are just over-the-counter. The insulin, I ask the pharmacist and they get it from their fridge... the only question asked is if I need a receipt for my insurance company -- and then I say "no, it's for my cat" and they look at me slightly oddly, but that's all :)

You can buy insulin syringes from Hocks.com and other online pharmacies with no prescription. If you buy insulin online, as some people do, a prescription may be required so have one just in case you are asked.

No prescription is required in Florida for syringes, except in a few cities. Most insulins require a prescription. A couple that do not require prescriptions are Humulin and Novolog.

I'm in Ohio, and no RX is needed for syringes, so double check that. You need an RX for insulins like lantus and levemir. See tis website for a list of laws by state http://www.isletsofhope.com/diabetes/st ... -laws.html or http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/d_09_700.htm.

I used to buy mine from either Walmart or hocks.com, which is located in Ohio, BTW. I used U100 syringes. Walmart has U100s, hocks.com has u100s and U40s, I think.

I'm in TX. When I switched to the U-100 syringes, I called Walgreens and they said I could bring in a copy of my vet bill as proof. I was using the U-40 syringes.

You shouldn't need a script for syringes in Ohio. That is why we can buy syringes from Hocks (based in Ohio) without a script. Larry explained well the US rules for insulin.

Our Canadian friends get insulin cheaper and without a prescription.

This articlefrom the pet diabetes wiki explains.
