prefilling syringes with lantus

I know with other insulins it has been fine but want to make sure it is ok to prefill 10 days worth of lantus into syringes. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this?
Thanks

I've always read that it is a no no, because the lubricant in the syringes can contaminate and degrade the insulin. You might want to cross post ing the Lantus forum.

I also heard with lantus that the plastic interacts with the insulin, that is one reason you cannot push back into cartridge

Grrr Thanks for the answers. This presents a problem for a tightly regulated cat as the owner is going away for 10 days

Last time around Christmas the vet tech od'd her. This was before the cat was regulated and my belief is the tech gave the wrong amount of insulin
This person is in Canada (don't remember where) let me see if she will allow me to post for a cat sitter here and if anyone lives nearby that might be interested
Thanks again

Ken, if it's a consistent dose, you can fill a sample syringe with colored water.

Just take a used syringe, snip off the needle with a scissors.

Draw in some colored water to the dose line so the sitter can see compare the
sample to the dose she/he draws.

Great idea Karen Thanks

the lantus.com site says don't prefill syringes, although they do say to squirt excess back into the vial bottle (i think it might be different with the pens) if you draw up a bubble into the syringe.

here's their how-to on filling the syringe -i've seen several discussions on here on how to do it. the big difference with cats is the angle of injection isn't straight on - but at 45 degrees instead.

Hi Ken,
No can do, not with lantus or levemir either. :(
Actually, you can prefill levemir syringes. I did it when I was gone for 6 days and Beau was on an impossible to draw dose of .05u (that's "point zero five"). I also gave my sitter, who was testing, a higher do not shoot number because Beau could drop to the 30s sometimes on that dose. He ended up never giving insulin and I used those prefilled syringes when I got back. The last shot from them was two weeks after I had originally drawn it.

I did it a couple of times when I left my Fred for a couple of days so that I took misdosing out of the equation for the kitty sitter. The cat sitter was taking blood tests and didn't appear that anything was amiss.
