Prednisone vs Blood glucose - any thoughts?

My chatran is given a pred tab today as a last resort for pain. Is any of you here have experienced with this?
What does it do to his bg level? And the dosing?

Steroids such as prednisone and prednisolone reduce inflammation and may boost appetite (just ask we humans who have had it!)

It may raise glucose levels; you adjust the insulin as needed to compensate for it.

Tyler was on prednisone for his asthma for 4 years (2.5 mg given every other day) to reduce the inflammation in his airways and control his asthma attacks. It raises blood sugar levels (I do not know to what degree however) and raises the risks of diabetes for felines if taken long term (although I have heard of situations where the onset of diabetes took place w/in months).

It sounds like it's being taken for something completely different other than asthma but if your cat has diabetes AND asthma, it may be worth looking into a mask and inhaler like Aerokat & Flovent as a long term solution. I don't know enough about pain management meds in cats but I did not know that prednisone was considered a pain med.
 
Thank you all for your reply. My vet is doing everything possible before we will make that dreadful decision. He is not still doing well and I'm in a big mess. Will still wait and see if the pred is working.

It is so hard, he still come to us and give us the biggest purrr.

Poor chatran

I am sure you have had already tried this but buprenex worked great as pain relief for my cat remi when he was in terrible pain from pancreatitis.

When remi first went on insulin he was still taking prednicare eod and I noticed a slight rise in his blood glucose on those days. If he was going to stay on it my vet recommended he gets the same dose every day so it's affect on the insulin was consistent and predicable.

Is Chatran able to eat anything? Could you liquidise his food to help him swallow it more easily? Is there any possibility of using a feeding tube to help him get nutrition?

Also, I don't know if this might help but I've recently switched Saoirse to a food that seems to have helped her a great deal. It has a high amount of taurine supplementation (1500mg/kg). I've been reading up on taurine today and apparently it acts as an anti-inflammatory in the body.

Sarah's recommendation about buprenorphine is good.

I will mention the buprenorphine to my vet and see what he thinks - is this anti inflammatory as well?

Yes I have been syringe feeding him. What sort of food did you switch him too?

Hi Rosie,

Relieved to hear that you're managing to help Chatran get some nourishment.

Buprenorphine is an opiate painkiller.

I'm feeding Saoirse Smilla Kitten Food with Chicken (poultry & chicken). It's an easily digestible food. I've included a link to the site I buy it from so that you can look at the ingredients to see if you can find something similar where you are.

In general, I try to feed Saoirse foods that are easily digestible and that don't smell too strong. (The stronger-smelling foods seem to be a little too rich for her sensitive tum.)

Hi Rosie,

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know much about DKA so I don't know whether the hind leg weakness might be related. Have you got ketone test strips at home? The hind leg weakness is a symptom of diabetic neuropathy and B12 supplementation can help. Have you spoken to your vet about it? If you suspect DKA then you should contact your vet as a matter of urgency.

I hope that someone more experienced will give you more information.

Have rang the vet this morning and he said possible its D Neuropathy. Because he is on pred his bg is quite high. I did mention the b12 supplement and he said I need to take him there first. My poor bubba just had enough of vet visit and also the vet gave me the recovery food which is very high in calorie so I don't know if this contributes as well.

Chatran still dragging his one hind leg and he is now in the garden enjoying the sun.

It won't hurt him to give him methyl-B12. It is a water soluble vitamin and any excess goes out through the kidneys.

Having just 1 side being a problem suggests it could be something else - a pinched nerve, a muscle strain from landing awkwardly, and so on.
 
Thank you BJ. Yes it could be just pinch nerve or something because it's only 1 leg. The vet also said it should not cause DN straight away just after only 3 days on pred. 2.5 mg a day.

He was starting to do well on his bg and now this happen.

My husband still have hope that he will recover from all of this. He still go to toilet, purr and still look at us when we call him.

I don't know whether it's available where you are, but I thought it sounded like something that might help Chatran. Maybe you could ask your vet about it?

Hi aini,

He is getting worst. Will take home to the vet tomorrow and see how we go.

Hubby doesn't want him go yet but I do as I don't want him suffer anymore. I did and still are doing everything most Mumma cat will do but I see that he doesn't want to fight no more. I love him so much and I don't know how I go with out him.

I think the infection must've spread all through his body now. I hope my husband will agree with me to free him soon :cry:

My sweetest boy Chatran passed away this afternoon. I feel so numb and don't know what to say or think.

I want to express my sincerest gratitude to the people here who help me through and to all your wishes.

I'm so sorry, Rosie. Hugs for you and your husband during this difficult time. I hope that eventually thoughts of Chatran will make you smile instead of cry.

You will always miss him, even though I believe his spirit is always with you. I feel like you don't 'get over' a loss, but learn to live with it. I lost my 3 girls within a year (2 of them in less than a month), Jordan (Angel's sister) last Sept, she was only 8, Lianna this July and Cera this August. To be honest I haven't even begun to process the grief of losing Lili and Cera, I still can't really believe it. Luckily Angel went into remission (on the anniversary of his sister's death) so I'm trying to focus on the positive and keeping him well. I have 2 adorable kittens now, brother and sister, Shakira and Romeo, and Angel is so loving with them, it's given him a new lease of life.

Try to be strong, he loved you so much and wouldn't want you to be sad, it's hard, I know. I'm saying the things I say to myself...

Thank you so much for the kinds words. Everyday is getting harder. Everywhere I look, it's empty. I have two more fur babies Beruska and Hazel and both of them are fretting. One waits by the door and the other wait by the bedroom door where chatran used to sleep. It breaks my heart to see them both like this. I know how much they miss him. Both of them looks so sad, haven't played in days but constant meowing. Even my two legged toddler is looking for him.

Give your 2 other furbabies lots of extra cuddles (I'm sure you are anyway), you can comfort each other. Think of the happy memories, but go on to make new happy memories with Beruska and Hazel.

I talk to my girls and my boy Sammi and tell them how much I miss them. I write about them, (one book I can recommend is 'My personal pet remembrance journal' by Enid Samuel Traisman), I love scrapbooking and art journaling so I make pages with their photos, and digital scrapbook pages for my desktop. Writing is theraputic, it helps you grieve and gets things out, plus I find with every loss I'm desperate to write down all the memories, I'm scared of forgetting the good times. I'm not a poet at all but I wrote 2 poems when I lost my boy Sammi 6 years ago, and my friend who's a published writer and creative writing teacher said they were really good.

I have songs that remind me of them, not sure what sort of music you're into but 2 that make me think of Cera are Unforgettable (the old one) and Into the Blue by Moby.

A few days after I lost Jordan, I was on the sofa and Lianna sat on my knee and Cera and Angel sat either side of me. After I lost Lianna, Cera and Angel would sit either side of me for a few evenings and I would cuddle them close to me. Now I see how happy Angel is with the kittens, he hasn't had a younger cat to play with since I lost Jordan. These 3 are my family on earth and I want to make the most of the time I have with them.

I order this plaque to put on our garden so I see him every time I hose the plants.
