?? Prednisone for licking & scratching

I think I need to give Phoenix a short term dose of prednisone. He has started licking and scratching constantly, not flea related. He has taken prednisone before but I am worried about the effects it will have on his diabetes.

I started him on amoxicillin on Friday as well. He has had this licking and scratching before and was treated with antibiotics and prednisone. He is eating fine but has seemed a bit lethargic the last week. Any advice on the prednisone would be appreciated. The vet usually keeps him on it for about a week.

Is the licking and scratching on account of some allergy?
In the past, the vets have diagnosed an infection caused by fleas. He can't use any of the flea meds due to severe reactions. I think it may be an allergy. It always seems to happen during the winter. The prednisone seems to help a lot. I don't want to take him into the vet without trying the antibiotics and prednisone first. To get blood work, they would have to sedate him. He is eating great and I don't want to upset him.

Is he eating the same type of food and proteins? Some food allergies can cause skin reactions.

For cats, it should be prednisolone, not prednisone. And yes, it will raise his blood sugars.

His food is the same. I was just concerned about having to use the prednisone even though I think he needs it. If his BG goes up, should I raise his dose or wait until he finishes the course of prednisone?

Have you asked your vet about using an antihistamine like chlorpheneramine or Zyrtec? Both are often used for cats with skin itchiness/allergy and they shouldn't affect his bg like prednisolone will.
