I talked to my vet this morning because Leo's #'s are still high so we are going to increase his dosage to 2.5u 2x a day. She then told me to keep him on the RC Glycobalance wet. I asked if I could switch to a low carb commercial wet food and she said she doesn't know about using commercial food only the precription food. My question is should I keep him on RC or can I switch him to a commercial low carb wet food without doing any harm?

Hello Su Jones!

My vet also had recommended a prescription diet to me (Hill's W/D). While my kitty was doing OK with this food eating & BG average coming down, the people of this board had a lot of good things to say about Fancy Feast Classics wet food for diabetic kitties. The prescription foods are often still to high in carbs. You want something that is less than 10% and FFC fits the bill and my cat loves it.

Fancy Feast always seemed taboo to me but after some research, it's much better for my cat than the expensive dry food I had him on before which I am sure contributed to his diabetes!

If you decide to make the switch, be extra careful with insulin dosing. I hope that you are home testing. You will noticed BG# go lower as soon as you're on a 10% or lower carb food--it's almost a guarantee. You can check out Bacio's Chart in my signature (diet change is noted in the right column) to see the effect it had on my kitty.

Good Luck!

yes I am doing home testing, that is how I noticed his #'s still high. I don't have any FFC but do have some friskies that are on the list so I will try those. Leo used eat kibble and some wet food but I have stopped giving the dry and he seems to be adjusting to an all can diet.

Hi, Su Jones! As best as I can determine, the RC Glycobalance canned food is under 10% carbs, probably somewhere around 5%, give or take, but don't quote me on that, that's just "best guess" calculations as I couldn't find all the information needed to calculate it properly. However, it is very expensive, almost 3x what I'm paying for FF Classic!

I called RC yesterday about the carbs in a 30z can. They told me that the carbs are 2.2%. I know that is good but like you said it is very expensive. I bought a case because vet insisted but feeding 4.5 cans a day at $32 a case is ridiculous. I'm hoping that as long as I keep the carbs below 10% that the brand of food is less important as long as he will eat it.
