My 15-year old baby, Precious, was just diagnosed with diabetes. She spent 4 days at the vet while they got her regulated. After reading your post, I realize that may not have been necessary. She is eating the Hills M/D prescription canned food. I was reading on your site that this may not be necessary either. I've taken her in for one follow-up visit at one week to check her sugar level (82) and need to take her back in two weeks. I welcome any information from experts. She also recently had a fibroid carcenoma tumor removed from just above her tail. She eats, purrs, cuddles and makes herself heard still.

Welcome to the board. A couple of questions immediately come to mind. What type of insulin are you using? What dose? The m/d is ok if she will eat it, but there are other less expensive foods that are probably a little better quality.

I'm also wondering if you are testing her bg at home. It is quite important to test at a minimum before each shot to be sure that it is safe to give insulin. Any dose changes are based on the lowest point in her 12 hour cycle, so having a few tests in the 6 to 8 hour time after her shot is also important. These mid-cycle tests don't HAVE to be taken every day, but the more data you have the better you will be able to control her blood sugar.

I hope that your vet is having you give 2 shots, 12 hours apart. Cat's metabolism is not like dogs or people, and insulin every 12 hours is what cats need.
