Hello, I just took my cat in for teeth cleaning and they did blood work. Vet told me there was some glucose in her urine. Said we caught it at an early stage. No Ketos in urine. Shes 15 lbs. Needs to lose weight. I was going to start her on a low carb diet. The vet wants me to start her on insulin now. Low dosage .1. I was just wondering if she is pre diabetic can i just try the diet first or do both? I am starting to read the posts on here but most are for diabetic cats

Changing to a low carb canned diet is safest before you start on insulin. As long as there isn't any ketones in the picture, it's totally reasonable to try the diet change first.

It will also give you a chance to learn how to home test. Tests done at the vet's office are totally unreliable because the cat is under stress which can raise the blood glucose up to 200 points.

Most of us use plain old Fancy Feast Classics, Friskies pates or Sheba pates....there is no need to buy expensive "prescription" foods!

I agree with Chris. I would change over to a low carb diet first and start testing the blood sugars. You can buy a human meter at Walmart.
I would also buy a bottle of Ketostix from the pharmacy and test the urine every couple of days to make sure ketones are not developing. Much easier to deal with ketones than DKA which develops if ketones are not dealt with quickly.
Keep asking lots of questions.

I agree, try the diet change first and also start home testing. Unless your vet did a fructosomine test as part of the blood work, the test they may have used may not be truly accurate. If you cat had pain before the dental or stressed from being at the vet, that can also cause higher glucose readings.

Thank you for the responses. They only did a urinalysis test to show that there was a liitle glucose in the urine. She had always eaten fancy feast grilled...just not the pates...which im finding out she does not like. I did cut down on the dry food and slowing switching over to purina pro plan...it states higher protein....but still has the carbs. How much do you feed a 15lb cat. Im giving her dry 1/3 cup in morning and at night with 1/2 of wet.

Almost all dry food is high in carbs. If you have to feed dry then Young Again is one brand that is lower in carbs. However you really want to to try to change her to only canned food. You have a better chance to have her diabetes controlled by diet if you can switch to a low carb canned food diet.

Cut out the dry all together. Maybe try mixing the pate and grilled half and half and gradually reduce the Grilled. Most of the flaked ones are OK too so she my might like that texture better. Check the food list.

I finally was able to get tests results back. The vet told me she needs to be on insulin. Even with her being pre diabetic. I was hoping to just change her diet
