I just knew that this was something I'd eventually have to face, I just didn't know how soon it would happen. TK developed an abcess in his left front paw last week. I was able to bring it to a head, and got it drained out. I've been keeping his foot clean, and soaking it, watching for signs. He's been fine, eating, drinking, absolutely normal, until this morning!
While he showed interest in my normal morning routine here, he didn't eat his breakfast. As I watched him, he left his food, went into the bedroom, and curled up on a dresser. So I took him into the bathroom and took his temp.......102.9. Ok, I know that's not a major fever, but for TK that means he's sick. I called my vet, then took him in.
Because my money is now so tight, what with hubby passing and I won't get a paycheck until the end of September, I couldn't allow the vet to run "all" the tests that she wanted to do. However, they did keep TK for the day, gave him a bunch of sub-q fluids......he's also now got dripping diarrhea from licking soapy water......they did run cbc which showed his white cell count to be low. They also gave him a shot of convenia...antibiotic. Normally we'd use doxy for him, but it's much too high of a cost. They also cleaned his foot abcess.
I brought TK back home this evening, and he just seems so drained of energy, much like myself right now. I fed him his dinner, and thankfully he ate some, not all of it, but he got some inside his tummy. I'm giving him propectalin to try and get his diarrhea under control. My vet said that I could also soak his foot a couple times a day in warm water/epsom salt......I don't have any, but I can get some from the local CVS.
I've also got to reduce his twice daily pred down to once daily, at least for the next couple of weeks to see if that'll help his body be better able to fight this infection. He needs the pred to keep his yeast infection symptoms at bay, but I know I can reduce him down to once daily for 3 weeks before he starts scratching himself. My vet did tell me though, that if by Wednesday he's not feeling any better, then maybe I should think about letting TK go.
I really don't want that to happen, especially while I'm still so lost in my own mind because of hubby passing, but.....I'll have to wait and see how TK does. And, if by Wednesday if he's not any better, then maybe it'll be time to let his daddy (hubby) have him. I don't know..........I just don't know.
So please, if you can spare any healing thoughts and/or prayers for TK, I'll most definitely appreciate them. I'll keep you posted on how he does. Thanks ever so much!
