Power Failure - Insulin

I'm in the DC area and it looks like we are going to get slammed with the Frankenstorm in a couple of days. We lose power every time it gets windy, so there's so way we won't this time, probably for at least several days. I've never really worried about it but...of course...we have a cat who has been on Lantus for one week and now I'm faced with trying to keep that cool enough through the power outage. There are no generators to be had in the area, so that option is out.

We've bought a bunch of those blue gel cooler packs and of course the freezer will stay cool for several days if we keep it closed. What should I do?

As long as the Lantus doesn't freeze, it will be fine at room temperature  The (Human) info for Lantus says to keep open in use Lantus under 86 F away from direct heat and light. Just keep your Lantus as cool as possible in the frridge with or without ice packs. If you use ice packs, wrap the Lantus in paper towel so that it doesn't directly touch the ice pack and potentially freeze.

Thank you squeem3. I've been so nervous about this but you set my mind at ease. Now all I have to worry about is the possibility of a tree crushing my house lol.

Why not try getting a cooler and put it in the cooler with ice in the bottom of the cooler. It would sit on top basically and keep it cold. We had to do the same thing in Janurary when a tornado came through and knocked out the power for a week. I wasnt using Lantus yet but I still had insulin to keep cold (Humilin N). We put it in a zip lock bag and set it in the cooler on top of the ice and if the ice melted it was only in really cold water and it stayed just as cold as it did in the fridge.

Maybe put it in a little food tubby- you don't want it sitting directly on the ice. But that has been how I've transported insulin in the past.
