Possibly coming out of remission

Beeker was dx'd with FD in sept '09 and in remission by november. He was on lantus. I thought we had him switched to wet food, but about 3 weeks after remission, it was clear he wasn't going to continue eating it. He wasn't getting nearly enough calories, so the decision was made to let him have dry food again and deal with the consequences as they arise. Even if that meant going back on insulin. Right now he eats NV instinct, which is the lowest carb dry food out there

His numbers are creeping back up. I still test him almost every night and sometimes I still get numbers in the normal range so it's obvious he's still producing SOME insulin on his own. I was out of town and DH got 171 last night and 153 the night before. But, just a couple of days ago I got a 93. I have been consistently getting numbers higher than 120, but not terribly higher. Generally 130's-140's. These are all numbers that are right before meal time BTW.

I know everyone doesn't care for humulin N, but what about using microdoses as a booster occasionally? I know you can't do that with lantus since it has to be given consistently. I'll be taking him to the vet in a couple of weeks and discussing it with my vet, but just wondering if anyone has ever done this and what are your thoughts on it.

I'm not jumping to conclusions yet, but just want to be prepared and have a game plan.

I am a believer in N for some kitties. My Twiggie is on small doses of N to keep her BGs down. In the last month or so her highest BG has been 181 before shots. I soot at low BGs like tonight she was about 150 and my experience shows that 1/2 unit is good. I shoot a very little at a BG of 100. It is small measuring those small doses.

Yes, I remember how hard it is to measure those micro doses from when Beeker was going into remission on Lantus! The last shot he got was .1u and he went to the 30's. I syringed about 10 feeding syringes full of gravy before I got him up to the 60's again. That's why I don't think it's wise to start him on lantus again at this point since he's mostly keeping himself down. Although, the 171 last night that DH got may have been stress induced because he said he had to poke 3 times.

I just did a test about an hour ago and got 123, so that's not bad. I'll just have to keep an eye on things and see where the pancreas leads us.

Thanks for sharing your experience Larry.

I would agree that for a cat that's slipping up into borderline diabetic territory, small doses of N are ideal. You can quickly measure their effect, they take out the extra blood sugar spike fast, and when they're over, the cat's pancreas takes over for the basal task.
