For better or worse most human based research passes through animals first and it's mouse based research at this point.
Unfortunately, from the viewpoint of this research, in cats type 2 diabetes is apparently more common than type 1. Up to 80-95% could be type 2, but I've seen different %'s tossed around. Type 1 is supposed to be the most common in dogs though.
