Possible change of Meds

I have not been able to get Simba regulated after nearly 5 months. 1.5 - 1.75 units he is still too high BG and 2 units take him 2 low. My very caring Vet said since he is progressing well and gaining weight & strength back along with less urinating we may have to live with that and not treat his numbers, but rather his life quality and it is very good. OR we can change to Norvolin N which he has had work very well with cats who have issues with Glargine, even though it is mostly prescribed for dogs. I may give that a try to see if anything different comes of it. I did a search here and nothing comes up for Norvolin N. It is certainly less expensive than Glargine if it works...

I will let others chime in on the insulin. However, ss shows Simba isn't getting quite enough yet and has been on this dose for awhile. I don't see any overnight tests, a lot of cats for an unknown reason tend to go low so it's hard to know what is happening at night.

What food are you feeding and how often? Are you giving treats, what kind?

It hasn't been long since diagnosis, it takes time.

Novolin N is a lousy choice for insulin for cats. It lasts at most 8 hours vs the 12 for Lantus. You can buy Lantus on line from a Canadian pharmacy at a much better price than you can get in the stores. Or drive across the border and get it at any pharmacy.

I think you need to start following the guidelines of SLGS more closely. Hold a dose 7 days, and do a curve on that 7th day and increase if you aren't seeing numbers between 90 and 149. I'd also like to see a few more spot checks, especially after you shoot those yellow preshots. It's still possible he's going lower mid cycle then bouncing, not enough data to differentiate that scenario from not enough insulin. You did do a curve a couple days ago, the 7th day, but didn't increase afterwards.

Ming has been on Lantus since October 2018 and recently switched to Levemir at the end of March. He's not regulated. Take a look on his SS. It's a mess.

I feel like you haven't given Lantus a good enough try yet but I also can't comment on how well Novolin N is since I've never used it myself. I agree with the others who have already chimed in that Simba probably needs more insulin and more tests. There's also the case of glucose toxicity which might be building up because there just isn't enough insulin right now. I know you said 2 units takes Simba too low and 1.75 units not enough but it's hard to really know without enough testing day and night. And insulin needs change all the time.

I agree you need to get some more tests during the cycle. You have very few in the pm cycle. Cats often drop lower at night. Simba could be bouncing.
I agree with Wendy. Novolin N is a lousy insulin for a cat.

I see Simba earned another reduction with that 79 a couple days ago. You should be giving 1.25 units now. Hopefully giving a slightly smaller dose means you won’t have to skip shots which is making him go high as a result.
