Anyone near me have fluids I can borrow ? Enumclaw WA.

Briefly...I just picked up a sweet kitty from the street.

Staggering down the middle of the roadway, very wet from our heavy rain here.
And very cold, shivering. But she purrs when I hold her.

I have her in a large spare kennel with food, water, litter box, and on a warming pad.
She has eaten. ( Inhaled a can of FF in record time). I will feed her small frequent meals.
She is just skin & bones, but de-clawed....someone's kitty.

She is emaciated and very de-hydrated. Very small...just over 3# .

I have lines, needles and syringes on hand, but no LRS or bagged saline.
She really could use some fluids....even her paw-pads are shriveled up.

I do have a couple of un-opened bottles of saline that you use for contact lenses.

Can I use that ? It says Preservative free...same PH as natural tears.

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

Karen, if she will eat - try making the water soupy. I think that would be better than saline but maybe someone else knows better.

Is there a vet or er you can call and at least ask that question?

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

If she is eating thats good... Our Angel we rescued out of the dumpster at a very young age and in similar condition. I got fluids in her using pedilite (sp?) It only took a couple of mouthfuls with Angel before she dove head first into the water dish. Not sure how good it was for her but it worked and it was all we had on hand at the time.

6 months later Angel is a beautiful and happy girl

I am adding a bit of warm water to canned food.

I was able to get about 2cc of water in her via oral syringe.

She has approached the water dish, but not drank.

She can barely stand. But at least she is warm and dry now,
and getting all the help I can give her.

She's very sweet....I'm calling her Pauline.. (ref: Poor Pitiful Pauline).

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

Karen, I wouldn't use the saline. If she is in such bad shape, her electrolytes might be off already and then we'd be adding in an unknown solution (in terms of electrolyte breakdown). Besides that, I don't know if there is anything in there that might be irritating to the skin. Do you have an ER that is reasonably close?

Also, please don't feed her too much too soon. If she is this dehydrated, she is likely to be starved and there is some danger in food overloading (you can google 're-feeding syndrome') if you start packing in food. I would get her to the vet as soon as you can do so.

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

Thanks, Jess....I won't give and Saline Sub-Q.

I was thinking small frequent meals.

There is an ER...but they charge an arm & leg.

I'm pretty sure she just needs supportive care.

I want to take her to my own vet Tuesday (after holiday) for FIV and FeLV tests, so I know
how careful I have to be around my other two.

I hope I find her owner...and that they care. We do get a lot of dumped animals
here out in the country where I live. She has been on her own for quite some time, I think.

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

Hi Karen

Do you think you could go to the ER just for an exam, blood test, microchip scan, and SQ fluids? I'm worried that, given the level of dehydration you describe (shriveled paw pads) that she needs more aggressive supportive care. Quite frankly I'm also worried that something bigger is wrong, since cats can usually maintain a minimum of hydration even loose outdoors.

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

oh my ... I hope kitty get's all the help she needs, thank you for taking her in and doing what you can for her!

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

I agree that she should probably see a vet.

I'm also wondering -- is there any sign of jaundice? You said she was declawed, so presumably getting food would be a problem, and the later stages of hepatic lipidosis can cause extreme weigh loss and dehydration.

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

No signs of jaundice (whites of eyes are white)...gums maybe a little pale.

Good news...she used the litter box. Peed and also pooped. A couple of small hard pellets and also
about 2tsp of loose stuff...probably from the un-familiar food she's eating.

She is drinking a few licks of water and I'm giving her a few cc's of Pedialyte unflavored
every couple of hours.

She perks up a little when I go in to check on her...otherwise just resting on her
warming pad. Must feel good to have a nice warm bed. She makes biscuits on her bed.
Also purrs when I hold her.

She either has an injury to her left back leg, or possibly skeletal deformities.
Her tail is about 4-inches long and very kinky----Manx mix, possibly.

But that is the least of her problems right now.

I suppose the shriveled paw pads could be due to fat stores depletion.
They feel mushy.

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

Karen, do you have any Nutrical you can give her? Tuna water? White water (water with just a hint of milk or KMR mixed in)?

Re: 911: No fluids on hand....can I use "saline"

No nutrical on hand...very high in sugar anyway.

She is a tiny bit perkier this morning.

She got up to greet me, came to the front of the kennel.

She has had a little snack and drank quite a bit of water.

She has trouble eating from the floor level, so I put her dishes
up on a couple of bricks and that seems to help her.

She loves to cuddle.

She sounds very sweet and deserves a chance at life. She's lucky she found you! Keep us updated and get a picture if you can.
