Hi. I am new here and this is my first post. I am located in the middle of MN.
My cat, Smudge was diagnosed with the dreadful disease about four and half months ago. At the time he weighed about 28 lbs. Big boned and big boy. He is also on Vetmedin, Enelapril (sp?) and Lasix for a deformed heart. He is about 9 years old. When he first when in he had neuropathy and walked on his haunches. He was put on ProZinc 2 Units 2x/day. Oddly....about a couple of weeks ago he was running very low in the 40's and the Vet had continued his Units although reduced them to 1 2x/day. I bought a AlphTak2 and tested him at home and he was in the 60's and i decided to cut him back to half a unit 2x/day. Some other diabetes Groups said he should try without as he could have died so for over a week now he has been off insulin and has had a good appetite except for the last two days.
He has had some loose smelly stool. In fact ran back and forth to the potty three times in a row although didn't always poop. I think he has peed a little. He eats but reluctantly and not as much. He was eating FF Classics at 3.5-4 cans a day. It is a lot to get in him really.I weighed him yesterday and he weighed in at 23.5 lbs.
I only am able to if lucky get 3 cans in him. Actually that is what he normally ate at the beginning when everyone wanted him to loose weight. I had to buy tuna (I know....bad) in order to get him to eat a bit. Normally he has been running like 118 in am, 75-90- around 2 pm and evening about 80's 90's but today he was 122 am, 110 at 1:30 and I haven't tested him yet. Was going to wait for two hours to pass first. This is just a tad bit higher than he has been running. I do not know if he is constipated, nauseous or what. HE never drinks water ever since he always has wet food. He is less active in the last two days. What do I do???????
I have ordered Forti-Flora now and the Vet is nearly 45 minutes away. He does not handle travel at all. Cries the whole time.
Is this common with remission cats????????????
Thanks!

Well yes and no...My guy has beenin remission for the last 3 years and yes his Bgs that you're seeing are in normal range for a cat in remission so is a decreased appetite. My Maxwell is a big guy long and tall and weighs 17lbs. He maintains his weight on about 8-10ozs of canned food. Or about 3 cans of Fancy Feast...none of my 14 cats drink water since they are all on a wet only diet. Cats are designed to get their fluids through their food so they have a low thirst drive.

What isn't normal for a remission cat is the smelly poo.. With a diet controlled diabetic they are pretty much just regular cats that can never eat high carb food again, so if it isn't normal for a non diabetic cat then it's not normal for a diet controlled diabetic.

That is good to know. He now tested at 81 pre-feed. Whew! He ate a little more willingly. His last poo which was small and in parts was a little more brown but still squirty. I will try to feed him again a couple of times as he seems to want to only in small amounts at the moment. Someone told me to think about pancreatitis. Can I treat that at home since he gets super stressed traveling so very far as we live in the country.

Diarrhea may come from a variety of causes. If this is something new and unusual for him, take him to a vet to get it properly diagnosed.

Some folks find that giving a probiotic - beneficial bacteria - helps.

He tested at 11 this morning and had a wet combined with solid poo but still really stinky. He also came back to eat a second time a couple of hours later. Then later on her went tot he box and cried. He was standing as if to spray but nothing and then he squatted and a couple drops maybe. Do you think he is plugged?????????

Glad you're taking him to the vet.

If he has an infection, a urethral plug, or a stone, he needs veterinary treatment.
