Now that my shopping is done, and Poopy's food is restocked, going to try feeding him the same food and using my sliding scale for dosing to see how things go.

Sliding scale:

150-200 1.2u
200-250 1.4u
250-300 1.5u
>300 1.6u

Let's see if we can't get the Poopster figured out. :-D

Play ball!

Re: Poopy's game plan

Oh Teresa, I hope you can get in figured out. When you do, come figure out copper.

Cheering for you and the poopster

Re: Poopy's game plan

I've loved Poopy's name since the first time I saw it here. I call the drooler's "Poopy Dogs". The Pomeranian is "Little Poop", and the Rotty is "Big Poop".

Re: Poopy's game plan

The easiest food for me to get is Wal-Mart's Super Supper. At 4% carbs, it's a middle of the road winner with both kitties. I was going to go with PetSmart's Sophisticat's Turkey & Giblets at 0% carbs but they aren't stocked back again yet with the new stuff.

I liked the ideas presented to stick to the same food since Poopy likes to go up and down. This will cut down a variable, and maybe help to get Poopy regulated better. It's worth a try.

Thanks for the support and well wishes. :YMHUG:

Re: Poopy's game plan

I use the Fancy Feast Turkey Kitten. It is also 0%carbs.

Good luck.

Re: Poopy's game plan

Unfortunately, cost is a major factor. Our budget was tight before Dx (the economy plays a huge role in DHs income, and it is NOT getting better, folks). We had to get creative to be able to afford treatment and insulin, much less the change in cost of food. Thankfully, with two cats, two 13 oz. or 4 5.5oz. cans will feed them, and it costs .70-.72 a meal for Special Kitty or Sophisticats. The other brands cost more. So, bottom line, I spend over $40 on food now where it used to be under $9. But we make it work. :-D

The Poop is worth it. (Poopy just did a Lauren Bacall pose!)

Day 2 of Game Plan: AMPS 275, shot 1.5u (was shooting 1.4u, trying to be a bit more aggressive)

Will run home around +4-5 to check on him.

Re: Poopy's game plan

Morning Teresa, ~O)
Hope The Poop gives you exactly what you are looking to accomplish today. You've been doing great. Good job Mommabean! :-D

Re: Poopy's game plan

I hear ya on costs Teresa. I hope we can keep going, our work is so sporadic too. I am hoping regulating the food will help you. It is the only way we can do it here.
It removes variables so you can see exactly what a dose does on X amount of food for an extended time.
Good luck with it, we’re rootin' for ya!

Re: Poopy's game plan

Thanks! Now, if only I could control how much they eat and when. Sometimes they pig out and everything is gone within two hours. Other times they snack all day. Same amount of food, but intake varies and I know plays a part with the numbers.

Poop just likes to see me dance!

Re: Poopy's game plan

That was always a problem for us too. The cats would eat most of their food but leave a little. Then later one of them would come back and finish off some. It’s probably Asher since he’s a piggy, but you never know for sure because you can’t police their bowls all day long.

It has been easier since the vet put them on a diet. Since the original amount of food given is 1/3 less so they can loose weight, they are really ready to scarf it down at feeding time, so I can police while they are eating, but the bowls are licked clean at the end. Then I can give a small snack later and watch that everyone eats just their own snack

I never had kids because I felt I didn’t have a maternal bone in my body. Amazing what life throws at you along the way ;-)

Re: Poopy's game plan

I've often thought of biting the bullet and getting a timed feeder, but I'd have to police it so Mia gets her fair share. Thought about building Mia a feed box, too. Either way takes cash I just don't have at the moment. One step at a time! :-D

I may end up only feeding them so much at breakfast, then feeding again when I check on the Poop - but that means being able to come home every day and sometimes I just can't do that. While I theoretically get breaks and a lunch hour, most often it's working breaks and lunch.

One way or the other I'll get something figured out. :-D

I might need to create a second feeding station, so they can both eat at the same time. (Up off the floor due to the droolers.)

I don't want to be a party pooper (sorry Poopy, no pun intended) on the 0% carbs, but I wouldn't stress about not spending the bucks for more expensive food with zero carbs. I ran into this TT topic awhile back. It's just something to think about...which I guess is why it's posted in Think Tank.

As I posted here http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=38711&p=409649&hilit=cat+natural+diet#p409649, recent research indicates that cats "natural" diet is about 12% carbs, so maybe we do go too low, sometimes.

The real message is that Every Cat is Different (ECID) and we should be careful about slavish adherence to numbers and observe the "clinical" state of our cat, that is, how she is looking, her activities, etc.

It's just a little "food for thought" that sometimes we may be feeding too few carbs...who knew?

Re: Poopy's game plan

Thanks, Deb. Very interesting reading!

AMPS 252 1.5u shot

Nice run yesterday, over all, and a nice start today. :-D Everyone in the household seems happy. :-D I have an appointment with the joint doc today so maybe help is on the way for my shoulders. All in all, pretty darn good. :-D

Happy Tuesday!

Re: Poopy's game plan

+4.5 162

Won't be able to test at +6 but don't think he'll drop too much lower. Has food remaining from breakfast. PM shot may be late.

Re: Poopy's game plan

PMPS 268, shot at 5:30 - all at Mom's house. Figured Poopy would test higher so pleased with BG. Ride to Doc's wasn't a screamer but did whine, and same to Mom's. Ride home quieter. (Trying to get the Poop used to traveling so Mom and I can take him with us this June.)

Doc shot steriods into both shoulders, ordered PT as needed. Can't wait for tomorrow to see how I feel. :-D

Re: Poopy's game plan

AMPS 278...not bad. Staying in the yellows for PSs and pretty blues approaching or around nadir. Have noticed the food intake is sporadic, mostly mini meals here and there for both kitties.

Will hold the sliding scale through this week, and am thinking of bumping up the sliding scale a bit this weekend (bump the dose up .1u on each level) to see if Poopy can go green at nadir.

Thoughts?

Hi Teresa,

Preshots look good on Poopy. Nadir has been pretty constant in mid to high 100's so, IMO, you have someplace to go with the dose. I wouldn't imagine an extra .1u would place the Poopster in any danger. You already have him on a very low carb diet with the same quantity of food... although he eats it at various times during the day (also a + in my opinion as it will keep him level) so not much wiggle room there. I think I would go for it but make sure the 1st few cycles happen when you can observe, like the weekend, to ease any discomfort a dose increase may bring you.

Looking good on your plan!
I think if it were me I would also up a little over the weekend and
let Poopster settle and see what happnes

I've been tempted to go ahead and up his sliding scale by .1u but really don't want to have a hypo situation on a run home check...so I'll wait for Saturday to start.

I agree the cycle BGs have some room to drop. Ideally, I'd like to get Poopy mostly in PSs 200-250, with cycle BGs 80-120. That there's could call fer some purty fancy footwork, though, if'n he decides to dip low on me. Waiting through the week should give us an idea if that is likely to happen, though. Don't you think?

And if I do up the dose by .1u, I'm also thinking I should stick with it even if it dips his numbers where I'd like them to be (sort of ignore the sliding scale).

What I mean is, he's currently hitting 250-299 for PS and I'm shooting 1.5u. If I switch that to 1.6u, and he brings in PSs 200-250, to stay with the 1.6u and not drop down to 1.5u. Make sense?

My main concern - he shows glucose in his urine. No ketones (knock on wood) but the glucose bothers me. It tells me he's not regulated to where he should be for long term health. If I can get him to drop his PSs to 200-250, and cycle BGs to 80-120, I'm thinking that should end the glucose in his urine and better his long term health.

Am I reading too much into the glucose in his urine?

Thoughts and suggestions are MORE than welcome. :-D

The amount of food he eats...Last night and today they left food (1/3-1/2 cups). True, I'm feeding 2 13 oz. cans per day. I'm hoping they aren't tired of the same ole same ole and are just eating when they are hungry.

Edited to add: The calories for a 13 oz. can figure to 388 each (164/5.5 x 13). I know the Poop eats more than Mia but not really sure how much more. If Poopy used to weight 20 lbs (was hefty but not fat), at 20 cal per pound, he should be eating 400 calories. Sounds like he's getting a bit more than that. :-D Mia, on the other hand, is only 8 lbs. so needs only 160. That leaves 216 extra calories with 2 13 oz. cans a day. Of course, the Poop is still putting back on weight so shows he's eating more than the 400 calories, I would guess.

Sheesh. I can sure tell I've had more than one cuppa java this morning (my normal limit)! ~O)
