Okay so I went to the Vet this morning and I thought they were going to be doing dental work on him. The Vet told me she isn't exactly sure that the whole culprit to his high BG numbers is due to his mouth. I tried to argue with her on that. I told her that he has had high numbers since January and I just think he has an infection in his mouth somewhere and I want it fixed. So March 12th they are going to be extracting a few of his upper back teeths because she said they have a lot of tartar on them and she said they may be infected. So in the meantime she just prescribed me an antibiotic of Antirobe in capsules. Supposed to give it 2 times a day. So I am PRAYING that these antibiotic pills will help do what it can and thus be able to see his glucose numbers drop. I know its not the answer I wanted when I thought they would work on his teeth and clean them and stuff but that didn't happen today. So do you guys think just with an antibiotic alone without cleaning his teeth and stuff will be enough for right now to help him feel better and be able to get his glucose numbers to go down?

The antibiotic may results in temporarily being able o better control Pooper's BG. However, after stopping the antibiotics the poor control will likely return if the cause is "bad" teeth unless a dental is also done.

Well I won't be able to get dental work done until the 12th. So will hopefully get by until then. :(

Hey someone said or I read that the Wellness Core contains 11% carbs. However, using the Cat Food Nutrition calculator http://scheyderweb.com/cats/catfood.html says that it has 26% dry matter carbs. So which is it? My cats want crunchy dry food so is Young Again or Epigen 90 my best options for diabetic and non-diabetic cats?

The antibiotics will help till the dental, his numbers may not come down a lot but regardless it will help him feel better. Hidey's cleaning and extractions is what pushed him into remission. He was teetering for remission but his teeth were bad. He had them cleaned and his upper canines removed. Usually it takes a few weeks to get an appointment for a dental (at least in my experience) so seeing the 12th isnt bad, usually my vet has to schedule for the next month or so since dentals are only done on Wednesdays at her office. Someone on here told me.....when it doubt pull them out lol.

As to the dry food, theres Young again zero carb (5% carbs), EVO cat & kitten (12%carbs) Stella & chewys (1% I THINK) and Epigen (Im not sure on the %) If you call or email young again they will send you a nice sized sample for free. Young again has great customer service. Food is pricey, but you have to consider they eat less of it because its higher protein/nutrients than other dry food so you use a smaller amount.

Dry food is not advised, not only because of diabetes but other health issues it can cause...for more info on that check out catinfo.org. That being said, each of my cats get 1 TBS each in the morning, yes TBS lol, I do this so they can have their crunchies lol.

I've been using that food calculator for foods that I can't find on any of the pre-calculated food lists. I figured that the dry matter carb count would be the one to look at, since it says on the site that it's a more accurate count. But the wet carb counts (which are usually closer to what has been provided in the lists for the foods on those) is typically quite a bit lower. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me which carb count is the one to be looking at :)

The carb count I look at is the % of calories from carbs (I'm new here so I'm not sure what others are referring to.) If you take a look at the tables on catinfo it gives both % of calories from carbs and the % of carbs in the dry matter. Since fat has 9 calories/gram while protein and carbs each have 4 calories/gram the % of calories from carbs (and protein) may be less than the % of carbs (or protein) in the dry matter. The higher the fat content, the bigger the difference since it represents a larger % of calories. I think dry matter may also include non-nutrient fillers so the %P+%F+%C may be less than 100%. This complicates things even more :). If you're looking at the % given on the can, there will be a huge difference since that includes the water which is over 70% in canned food. Does that make sense? It looks to me that the food chart at the ckd site lists the %C in the dry matter and NOT the % of calories from the carbs (someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I want to say within a few weeks, sorry it was last year. WOW! That just made me realize in 3 weeks it will be a year that Hidey's been in remission. Shortly before Hidey's dental he was just getting random doses and than was running in the high 100's. He was off insulin a week or so before his dental, after his dental he dropped below 100 and has stayed there. I also have to feed him a LOW carb diet, he's very carb sensitive and it has to be 5% or less, and he has to eat every couple of hours so I feed him at 7 am, 7pm, & 1 am. The mini meals helped A LOT!

If he has an infection, the antibiotics should help lower the BG levels. They probably will prescribe additional antibiotics when they do his dental especially if they remove any teeth.

When Max had his tooth issues, the antibiotics did nothing to lower the sugars, although the bad smell in his mouth improved a little, so they were doing something.

His blood sugars went from being uncontrolled on 7U twice a day to being in the normal range the day after the dental. From there, we reduced about every 3 days to 3U twice a day. So the improvement was almost immediate after extractions. It's probably different in every cat/situation.

Stacym20, You insulin looks like it's peaking +4, +5 and wearing off way way too early. This is probably why you are having issues getting it under control. A 3x per day dosing might be necessary or a change to a longer acting insulin.

@Meya14 thank you for looking at Buds spreadsheet! Bud has a follow up appointment next Sunday and if his numbers aren't looking any better by then, I'm going to talk to the vet about switching insulins. I'm getting random good preshots followed by really high ones. I would love to dose 3x a day but with work, it's just not an option.
