Did everyone get this PM? I'll quote it here if I may, as this clearly needs an experienced advisor:

From: Pimiento72
To: LANTUS

My 10 year old cat (pimiento) who has never had a health problem his entire life was just diagnosed with diabetes. I began giving him lantus on October 4th, 2010. His numbers are way up there. I have been bringing him to the vet weekly to get him tested but i think that the ride is also making his numbers higher. I have been utlitizing this site for almost a week but am so overwhlemed by all of the info. I need to get a glucose monitor asap. any suggestions that will help and not break me finalacially? please help my nerves are so twisted i am up with my baby all night long because A) he refuses to eat wet food - always has
B) he is just lying around and i am terrified of a hypoglyemic eposide.
C) im so sacred he is not eating or drinking enough.

please help,

Kimmie

Who did she PM? I can't advise her on the lantus but can highly recommend that she go to the Health Forum and click on the "newbie kits" and Lori will send her out a glucometer, test strips, lancets, rice bag immediately...if I know Lori, she'll have it in the mail tomorrow.

She PM'd "LANTUS" which is a group that I hadn't realized existed but I guess I must be on and which seems to include everyone who posts here...!

I thought it'd be safest to post it up here to make sure that one of the experienced advisors would see it (just in case they didn't notice a new PM).

Perry --
I think anyone who is signed in as a Lantus Group member got the PM. Did you instruct Kimmie to look here for responses? I suspect she thinks she posted to the Lantus Board when she sent a mass PM.

Newbie kits take a while to arrive.

I'd suggest getting a Walmart brand meter -- a Relion. The meter, strips, etc. are probably the least expensive on the market.

Most cats will eat spontaneously if their numbers are dropping. However, there's no way to know what's going on with numbers without a test.

For now, find the lowest carb dry food (probably EVO), and gradually transition from dry to canned. You can find information on how to transition on Lisa Pierson, DVM's website on feline nutrition.

Anyone who is a member of the Lantus usergroup (you have to sign up for it through User Control Panel) got this PM.

I've responded to her via PM and I also suggested that she visit the Lantus ISG for more input. She is inquiring on how to test. Does anyone have the link to testing the ear handy? I'm at work, and can only drop in here for a few minutes, so I can't spend the time looking for it.
Thanks!!

I PM's her too as follows, copied a lot of other folks words here but was in a hurry!! Gotta go take Sooty to the vet now so I hope she'll come back and read it!

Kimmie, I don't know if anyone else replied yet but PMing 'Lantus' is not the way to do it. The best thing to do is to use "POST NEW TOPIC"!

Also it's suggested even if you are in a bad way with your cat, is to first go to the "FELINE HEALTH' forum and introduce yourself, you will also find a topic there near the top, called ''NEWBIE KITS' - post a new topic there, aslking for one! Then go back to the Lantus support group and post a new topic here in the LANTUS ISG forum, too, with your Questions. Use '???' in the Subject line this will get the attention of the experts!

Newbie kits take a while to arrive. So what in the mean time?

Most folks here suggest getting a Walmart brand meter -- a Relion. The meter, strips, etc. are probably the least expensive on the market. They work as well as any other! Other advice:

Most cats will eat spontaneously if their numbers are dropping. However, there's no way to know what's going on with numbers without a test. THIS is your #1 priority as you have already figured out. Go back and read the 'Sticky Posts again at the top of the Lantus forume they WILL help. Yes it's a lot to takke in all at once. You need to get a Hypo kit put together too and you will find a sticky post about that also!!! Remember in the mean time that too little insulin is preferable to too much.

For now, also, please, DO find the lowest carb dry food (probably EVO), and gradually transition from dry to canned. You can find information on how to transition on Lisa Pierson, DVM's website on feline nutrition. Dry foods are about the biggest no-no for diabetic cats, even the vet-prescribed special diets. Supermarket brands like Fancy Feast are actually far better (but not the ones with gravy!) look up the "Janet & Binky's" food lists.

Please do as suggested and you WILL get the help ypu need. The folks here have helped so many people including in very tricky situations such as yours. But you need to help them to help you - OK?

She can get the Relion at Walmart but I would still suggest she get a newbie kit. I have found it invaluable to have two meters and the kits
only cost the shipping...$6.00...also includes a rice bag.

I guess she PM'd all of us. Kimmie RELAX - read the articles and posts. Pimiento will be better off if you calm down. Lantusland is for Lantus users and no one is ignored. We have all been panicky at some point, too. I speak from experience (don't I folks?).

Has anyone PMd her a link to this thread. I didn't get the PM, apparently I goofed up joining the Lantus group since I'm in another.

Just did. Hope we hear back from her.
Perry (from tbp..)

i almost always get the kit out the day it is requested if the PO is still open and it usually takes 2 days to arrive. it is sent out priorty mail. when a person is overwhlmed already it is certainly a nice package to receive.
i can also send extra things if requested. syringes, keto-stix...as needed. please don't hesitate to use this service

Kimmie,

I'm still learning a lot here, only been about a month or so since joining. I recommend the Walmart Brand ReliON Micro as it is small for your hand and strips are cheap. Also, you can get supplies anywhere there is a Walmart.

Take a deep breath (as I still have to remind myself to do), love thy cat, and read as much info as you can take all the while taking deep breaths.

Tony
