"Hello ALL!
WE just found out that BEAN has this too!!! only since Monday, So, I am a newbie too! Glad to hear that you can help Snuggles! And I too went to Lori's site and I am expecting a meter soon. Any help that any of you can give.... THANK YOU FROM SUGAR BEAN AND HER MOM!"

Dear ohbell, and, of course, you too, sweet Bean,

Hope you don't mind starting a new post for you and Bean...

I love your enthusiasm! I love it that you've already ordered a newbie kit! You go, sugar mom, ohbell!!!

Can you tell us a little about Bean? Like what Bean likes to eat... What Bean's age is... What the vet ordered in terms of insulin and dose... Where you are located (no specifics necessary) in case you need hands-on support for home testing, or perhaps just a hug...

Ask as many questions as you need. We're all here to help you help sweet Bean.

Welcome to the place you never wanted to be; but, will be blessed for having found.

Encouraging hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

Hi Bell, I just responded to your Pm so I hope you will find yourself here on the thread Deb started for you....
We want to know alllllll about Bean.
Like Deb said, what insulin he's on, how much, what you are feeding him, what his diagnosis numbers were, his general health....
Totally looking forward to working with you and darn the post office is closed tomorow so your newbie kit won't arrive until Weds.
Lori
and tomtom too!

Lori and tomtom.....
ty for the warm welcome and starting the post!!!
Ms. Bean is girl... approx. 7 yrs old, taking 1 unit of BCP PZI.. 100-U... SYRINGES are 3/10, 5/16", 30 gauge. 2 times a day.
She is used to grazing on dry food as with my other 2 girls, but I have been giving her approx. 2 tablespoons of friskey indoor along with 2 tablespoons of potted meat which is high in salt... we will try mixing with tuna or can chicken now. She eats this as I am giving the insulin... Today is the first day since this all started that I have been able to stay at home with her to see if she is grazing still....she dont act that interested in the dry. Still drinking alot of water, litter box is still buzy but it seems to have calmed down some.... I think he sent her home with readings around 238..... we have appt. Wednesday for all day testing.... Vet said this was probably onset from recent move out of state and stress.... 2nd move just resently so that does not help the matter at all! (Guilty mom feeling)! I am hoping as we all adjust, she will not need this anymore?? Prayers welcome!
Deb - I live in Euless Texas and would LOVE to have anyone around this area help me out! (and hugs always welcome :? )
I have posted asking some questions this morning already...
But THANK YOU AGAIN.... as I learn the site!
Special thanks to tomtoms mom for providing me with the tester.... will be looking for it!

Good morning to all sugar babies and their beans!
Great news and needing of course some information/advice!
First of all, mommy woke up a little late, which is going to throw us off our schedule for my work week! (Bad Bad mommy).
BUTTTTT..... we actually made it to the kitchen for a breakfast preparation WITHOUT, and I am SHOUTING WITHOUT stopping by the bathroom to beg for a drink of water!!!!!!! YOU GO MS. BEAN!!
The dreaded injection did go a little better (mommy did not feel like throwing up, was not shaking quite so bad).
I can not wait til we both get the 'testing' down and done, as it scares the heck out of me shooting without reading!
Ms Bean also went to the bedroom after she ate, the shooting done and DID NOT stop at the bathroom for water!!!!!
OK, Mommy is having a celebration Easter morning...
Now my question--- I made up the unit before I went to bed so that it was ready to sit out and get room temp for a few min while I prepared food...This site is so wonderful, I just wanted to double check to make sure that is not ruining the doseage at all. I know I heard that it was alright to do this, but dont remember from where, I think it was from vet.
Next question---I did get some toys for the girls, including cat nip.... have not let Ms. Bean in on the fun yet.... it should not hurt her right?? Or is there any special time that I should not give it to her??
Next question --- Since I am behind on the insulin shot time, is it ok to move - adjust - the time up at bit so that I may give to her back on the schedule? We usually do the shoot secession at 6 am so that I may watch her 1 hour before I leave for work (per the vet instructions) and how important is it for that hour wait. I could be doing this 30 min. before I leave for work???? I know this would be a mute question if I were testing... but I am hoping that will happen by next week.
I know I will think of more questions for guidance and advice, but for now...HAPPY EASTER TO ALL AND HOPE YOU CAN SHARE MY SMALL CELEBRATION FOR MY SUGAR MS. BEAN FOR HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS THIS A.M.

HAPPY EASTER, what a treat. I remember how happy/shocked I was the first time Maisey didn't run immediately to the sink for a drink - as if she had been on a desert island for a week, gulping water like crazy. And I have two water fountains available.
Prozinc is forgiving and will let you adjust time. Most like to say in around half hour intervals, and it's lots easier when you've been testing and know what the numbers look like. We've fluctuated by an hour our more on occasion. If your going to a shorter time in-between you can lower by a smidge .1 so if doing a unit to the line just below.
Take time practicing the ear warming. When I first start with Maisey I was surprised how much easier it was if I warmed her ear for more than a minute. IF you haven't heard about ointment, vaseline to help it pool, read that. Another trick I have used is if she flipped her ear, catch the drop on your fingernail and let the meter suck it up from there.
Maisey and I got so used to her following me into the bathroom, that she still does, but now she just rests on the edge of the sink and talks to me.

I wanted to mention that while she is adjusting, you want to let her eat more if she wants it (stick to your wetfood - (I don't know what "potted meat" is?). Diabetic cats are not using their nutrition efficiently. Is the Friskies indoor canned? It's ok to get them all on a good low carb canned food and off of dry. I know Friskies have some good ones. Have you looked at the Janet and Binky food charts?

Karen & Pearl,
Yes, the first bout of canned food was friskie indoor... I viewed and printed the list, went shopping and got other low carb foods for the girls... mixing it with a bit of tuna and tuna juice... She enjoyed that last nite and this am.... saw her at water bowl... watched and she did a NORMAL drink!!! :-)
I also got some tuna flakes from pet store and we are practicing the 'eat your treat in mommys lap while she pets you' trick and only give her that treat while we do this.... she was much better today than last nite! SOOOO proud of my girl!

Kathyh & Maisey... ty for your post..... i need to purchase some vaseline then but I do have antibotic oint. on hand... we will try that and just wondering if you or anyone else knows about the insulin being drawn up the nite before??? Worried that it could be wrong. I would post new thread, but dont know how yet, any pointers????...... she is soo good today, walking around the house, checking out the open blanket cabinet, which is in the bathroom across from the water supply.... hanging with me a bit! NEVER thought that would happen~! I plan on posting some pix of my girls today as well..Smiles today and I will remember the ear flick trick as well.. ty soo much

bell your on pzi right? i don't think i would do that for 2 reasons. first the insulin is not supposed to be room temp. it is supposed to be between like 4o degee's or so...fidge temp, and second theinsulin could and likely will pick up some of the plastic qualities in the syringe.

i'm wondering if PZI is the same as ProZinc, and if so, is that the right needle to be using? Punkin was on Prozinc and using U-40 needles . . . and we had a problem when we switched to Lantus because it needs U-100 needles and no one told us.

If i'm wrong and butting in here, i apologize, i just know it created a serious dosing problem for us, and just want to make sure you've got the right syringe for that insulin.

she is using a compounded u100 pzi, i know, it's a bit different.

julie NEVER hesitate to say something if you even think you see something questionable. other's may have overlooked it or not thought of it....it could make all the difference in the world.
that is why we are ALL here...to contribute ALL of our observations or thoughts.
it was a good catch on your part :-D

Lori & Vicki, ty for the information and I believe I will refrain from mixing the nite before even tho i did put it back in frig.....
Julie... I dont think they are the same at all... from what I am trying to learn on here.... is for U-100; dont ever think you are wrong or out of line, I am new new new to this and all is welcome.... some advice i will take and whatever wont work for us, I (we) will adjust!
BTW... posted 2 albums of my furry family if anyone wants to take a view!
Again, ty all!

Dear Bell, and, of course, you too, sweet Ms. Bean!

I love your posts! I love your enthusiasm! And, I love it that there's starting to be less water/Gunga Din action for you both! I remember Giz going through 20 pounds of litter in less than a week before we started "litter"ally seeing hope once she started insulin -- and, she was my only cat...

Dearest Bell, please remember that Ms. Bean is not only extra sweet; but, she is still a cat. She's still your cat. Bring on the nip! Bring on the toys! If she's in the mood, she'll either imbibe or play. She's a cat, it's a mood thing...

Please accept my l-o-n-g hug from the northeast to you, dear Bell!

Much love and countless encouraging hugs for you, Ms. Bean, and her furry friends,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: I don't like to shoot cold insulin either. So, what works for Nikki is I load her syringe about 10-15 minutes before and park it upright in her syringe box (on the kitchen counter) before actually giving it to her. Don't leave it out overnight, though...

And, thank you, dearest Jon and Pia, forever in our hearts, for suggesting I simply load and leave the syringe out for those 10-15 minutes, instead of leaving out the actual pen and, therefore, possibly compromising the long-term integrity of the insulin...

You see, dear Bell, we all learn each and every day... Welcome to the dance!
