i know that in this case i probably did not practice what i preach...but my excuse is i have a nasty flu..feel terrible...have about 10 strips...do i need say more?

amps 377 (100 points higher than usual, have no idea why) shot 1.5u (normal shot is 1.2
+2.9 145 fed low carb.

1 hour later tom is outside just up the hill a bit resting in the grass under a shady tree. he always comes when called but i have no voice so i just clap my hands. he looks but makes no effort to come. i walk up and he allows me to gently pick him up, he's limp, and carry him to the house.

+4 65-----down 300 points in 4 hours, not hypo but no wonder he's a limp noodle.

here's where i break tradition with everything i always say about over reacting. i break out 1 small teaspoon of 18 carb ff.
and i actually carry him back to his original resting spot. outside.
you are probably all horrified...

in a half hour he's slowly walking back to the house.. i see him and go pick him up to bring him in. he goes right to his testing area.

4.5 66 holding steady.

i'm not feeding that even tho we have 2 hours at least to go. mosty cause i don't think the food has really hit him yet.

anyone want to comment ... or bash me. it was an over reaction i think but i am too sick to go to the store for more strips if he plummets. and i just don't want to keep bothering him.
am keeping a close eye.

oh, and as a side bar, it never fails that when i'm sick or really incapacitated that tom gets into some kind of a jam whether it be a fight or a hypo or dissapearing. it's his way of 'helping' take my mind off myself i think.

I can tell you are not feeling too well, because your statement is illogical based on your stated premise.

First off ...you have 10 strips plenty in this case if handled appropriately. If he drops you are going to use a few anyway. I would have gone ahead and fed a low carb and tested again in half an hour. If he rises 10-20 points going into his Nadir...you've used a few strips and kept your peace of mind.

Hopefully you'll feel better later to take that trip to the store or ask a neighbor to pick up some strips for you.

thanks blue. i'm afraid i may be bed ridden for a few days and i cannot talk at all, zero, with total laryngytis. i can't communicate to anyone via phone. i cannot even cancel my salon app't tomorow unless i get one of my friends to respond to an email asking them to do so.
i guess i am just tired and frustrated. not being able to talk is really a hard situation to be in when you live alone.
you know i did the small amount of high carb to break the speed and to not have to keep at it. pure laziness.

i think you did just fine given the situation. i saw your FB post and know you're not feeling well.

yeah maybe you shouldn't have reacted to that 377 and shot more insulin because a possible stressor could have caused it. he does like to do this stuff at the worst times doesn't he. :-) but what's done is done and you're handling it just fine.

fwiw lori, if he does drop too much and you can't get to more strips right away, i'd use some out of the newbie kits supplies and replace them later if need be.

yep i know i can do that but all i have left are the contour and they run like 30 points higher.
believe me i tested them with the same drop of blood against every other meter. and i have brand new vials of it and they also run high. did'nt want to got too off track.
i am as usual down on strips for the newbie's.
i have 100 one touch coming in from ebay soon. will divide and make that good for 5.
those darn accu-checks with their darn widget is a pain huh?
yep also about by fb announcement. looking for sweet talk anywhere i can get it and shamelessly too.

(((Lori)))) so sorry that you're not feeling well. Have you tested Tom again? If you have to break into the newbie kits, atleast you know that the contour runs 30 points higher.
Keep us posted.

Oh Lori I am so sorry to hear you are not feeling so good.

My mom didn't get to go out to visit DoDo today because she is battling something nasty as well. :(

Seems it is the season!

Hopefully, since I stepped in so late, Tom is feeling better?

I was in the same boat not too long ago where we just didn't have many more strips and the way DoDo can be erratic at night I was just praying that none of them would mess up (sometimes if I don't get enough blood to suck up and then go get some more it will error). Luckily usually either my mom can run out or I can if the other is not feeling so hot or if there is too much. I can't imagine having to do all of it on my own. Heck, I am a nervous wreck with DoDo at the 24 hour vet hospital!

Something I do now (and granted this started when he came home from the DKA episode) is I made a "lockbox"

I call it in case of a hurricane, ice storm, etc.

Inside, I have a brand new unopened vial of test strips for my Relion (50 ct), a meter, ketone urine strips, and some chicken strips. I keep it hidden in my mom's closet so it is out of mind if we are just not feeling up to going to get more strips or something.

Ahh yes we call those "earthquake kits" lol The nightmare scenario is the electric going out - then the fridge will not run to keep the insulin [and other meds] cold nailbite_smile . I found that the supply of dry ice in my neighborhood goes quickly the minute the power goes out.

Sorry to hear you are sick Lori and that I've been away & could not jump in today.

PM the number of your stylist and time they open & I'll call to cancel for you if that could help you.

Sorry you're sick! I've looked for your ss before, but not updated. Do you usually shoot on a sliding scale? It looks like you did a great job. Nothing wrong with a little gravy if it helps give you peace of mind especially when you're sick! But I'm a wimpy newbie and you're a bos veteran. I hope he's doing better now!

awwww, thanks everyone. i just woke up from about 1 1/2 hours nap...on the floor with tom! i never checked his sugar again but he's sure acting just fine.

and gator what i meant was I AM THE STYLIST and i have 4 appt's tomorow. and i don't know if you'd be able to hear the whisper that is my voice now.

as for his amps...it's always around 250-280. occasionally 290. so the 377 of course startled me. and i can't imagine there were any stressers that i missed. we both woke up together from a quiet nite.

actually his pmps last night was about 35 points higher than usual too. so who knows what's going on. and yes to some extent i shoot what might be called a sliding scale. i call it shooting the numbers. i shoot a bit more for higher and a bit less for lower. almost
always 1u at night and 1.2 in the morning cuase he runs low at night and high in the am. and i really should update my sheet. i guess anything goes tonight with his high carb treat.

see you all later...and their was my own example of 'panicky mom' rushing in to raise those numbers. :-D

Please don't get your clients sick. Hopefully you do not regale your clients with stories about diabetic kitties - the reactions of "most people" has become somewhat entertaining. I tried that with my stylist and got a pretty solidly blank look.

ummm, well they all do know about fdmb. and about tom. and about newbie kits now. so whatdaya think gator, TMI?

My stylist loves to hear about my kitties...but she's also my sister! Glad to hear tom's feeling better. Now it's your turn. :-D

Ohhh I think it's great info. :-D And hopefully it is at least entertaining to those that don't 'get it.' And most importantly these are the things that matter to you. The closest I ever got to someone getting it was him saying, "Yea my boss had a diabetic cat and they had to take it on vacations with them - it was crazy." I would have loved to take H places but sadly he was a super car sick stress kitty. But honestly I avoid telling most people the story... It's not the best way to pick up on chicks anyway - that defiantly qualifies as TMI ;-). "Like hi there, I'm Gator, can I buy you a drink and tell you about my dead cat who had diabetes??"  Sorry, I have a macabre sense of humor. I have to laugh about it.

well gator, in my earlier days here...let's just say i was obsessed. i think that's why we keep the thing going here. we really do like to communicate with other diabetic moms and dads.

ok newbie kits brain freeze....i have 50 relions, 50 true tracks (NEVER even tried those) and 25 free styles (no experience with those either.

is anyone else like me...you get hooked on your meter and thats it! i mean that's the only one you trust.

i only use the one cindy gave me in january for tom. accu-check with damn expensive strips.
and back with his first go round i only used his one touch. only! no matter it was THE most expensive strips. i am just a person of habit.

OMG Lori! It took me a while to figure out this wasn't one of your "stump the newbies" made-up scenarios! Hope you are feeling better soon, and that Tom is all back to normal by now. :YMHUG:

robin just called me and i had to whisper to her to pm me instead

i'm obsessed with my freestyle i think. probably 'cause i've used it pretty much religiously since 2006, up until recently when i stupidly decided to try something new due to price.

i've used at various times when doing testing lessons, etc... the one touch, the aviva, the relion ultima, the maxima ast, contour, and a bunch of other odd name ones no one here would recognize as they are via places like medicare, etc....and still i think the freestyle meters are the best. small and easy to handle, and such a smaaaaaaall bit of blood is needed. sometimes i can't even say for sure Mousie's bleeding 'cause i can't see anything but that sucker reads it and gives me a number. and i've done so many comparison tests with the thing over the years that i don't doubt it one bit.

to me the aviva is a bit large to handle when trying to wrangle a feisty kitty and yeah, the crap with the strips expiring is a turn off for me. the contour also to me is a bit awkward to handle when dealing with Mousie but when I've used it on humans I have no problem. fwiw, I've never noticed that it runs high or anything. the maxima ast just plain sucks if you ask me. it's economical for sure but my god you waste a lot of strips so over the long run i'm not so sure it's economical. that meter is the moodiest piece of you know what i've seen when it comes to meters. the one touch mini i thought was fine but again, the ultra was too big and OMG, the one touch ultra2 or the ultrasmart, might as well sit a PC on the cat. LOL!!

so for now, i stick with my freestyle. :-) i even just bought 200 strips for it even though i have like two or three hundred of the maxima strips left. that's how much that thing frustrates me. LOL!! now i'm trying to decide if i want to put them away for a day like you had today or if i just want to sell them off and recoup my money i put out for them.

cindy check out my new thread. it turns out i think i did do the right thing with tom today upon further reflection. i explain in the post. see if you agree. it's a learning tool. sometimes slow steering is'nt working.
