Squeak is on Vetsulin- sorry I forgot which board I was on--
Would you guys look at Squeak's SS? Since dropping below 30 night before last, I have not given him any insulin. Not been able to talk to the vet. He is eating well, looking and acting great- better than since before he was diagnosed with diabetes.

Just looking at the starting dose, like others noted in your previous thread, my hunch is that Squeak was started at too high of a dose of Lantus. The formula for the initial dose is:
initial dose = ideal weight in kilograms x 0.25
He'd need to be HUGE to have been started at 4.0u.

Lantus dosing is based on the lowest point in the cycle -- the nadir. What this means in practical terms is that you need to get pre-shot tests (to make sure it's safe to give insulin) and get at least one spot check during both the AM and PM cycles whenever possible. If you look at the spreadsheets of the kitties here, you'll see a good deal of variability with respect to how much people test. Some of this depends on work/school/other schedules or how that particular cat responds to insulin.

Based on what Squeak's SS looks like, I think reducing the dose would make very good sense. You can either use the formula above or drop the dose to a level you're comfortable with (e.g., 3.0u, 2.5u?). It's not unusual for many newly diagnosed cats to have been started on too much insulin or with the change to low carb food, for a cat's need for insulin to change dramatically.

Squeak uses Vetsulin- I was going to switch to Lantus today- but don't want to do anything until I know more about how he is.
Would you mind to look at the SS again based on him using Vetsulin?

I'm not sure if anyone on here is familiar with Vetsulin. Most of us use Lantus and some on here use Levemir.

You may want to get at least 1 test between PS times to see how he's doing. Do you know when his nadir is, meaning when his lowest # is during the day?

several people have posted on your other thread. i think you should go ahead and start giving the Lantus. On the other thread, wendy & I were suggesting 1.5u based upon Squeak's weight. She'd suggested going to 3units for the Vetsulin, but for Lantus, probably 1.5u would be a safe place to start. It's less nerve-wracking to go up the dosing scale than to go down.

It gets a little confusing to have multiple threads going for a cat. We have one post per cat per day. For tonight, why don't you continue posting on the other one, and then tomorrow start a new one. The format we use lets people see at a glance if a person needs help or if things are routine.

We post the day, cat's name, amps #, +# etc.

If you have a question, use the ? post icon that is above your posting window (where you're writing) and then take down the ? when you're satisfied with the answer. that way if you have a new question, when you add the ? we'll notice it again.
