Hello everyone, my name is Monica and I am writing from Italy. I am happy to have found this group and I hope so much you can help me in the daily management of this difficult pathology. My Jacqueline has been diabetic for about 5 years, I am treating her with Lantus (3 ml a day) and Purina Diabetic DM. Her blood glucose values fluctuate a bit but I would say they are quite under control. She recently had blood tests and the triglyceride values are very high (797). Maybe it depends on the food? I don't know what to do...has this happened to you too? Thank you for your answers and greetings to all of you and your kittens

Welcome Monica and Jacqueline, you couldn't have found a better group to join
There is nothing special about the Purina DM wet cat food except the high price
Purina DM WET food is about 6 percent carbs and so is okay to feed a diabetic cat (needs to be under 10 percent carbs.)
You might be able to finds some low carb foods here

helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help
If you need help setting anything up just ask we have a member who will be glad to help you
If you decide to set up your signature can you put from Italy :cat:

Hi, actually she had been eating for about a couple of hours and received her dose of Lantus. Her previous tests were from August 2023 and her triglyceride values were 289 ( our range in Italy is up to 160). If I remember correctly it had been more or less 6 hours since the meal. The vet told me to give her Glutamax for 2 months but I don't know, I would like your opinion. Excuse my English and thank you for your reply

I'll check the link, thank you. Ok glad to hear Purina is ok but then why these values? I was reading from the web this could be dangerous for the heart, and if it exceeds 1000 it could be fatal. I'm a bit worried

Is Jacqueline on any medications other than insulin? Some medications can cause higher triglycerides. Other possible reasons for higher triglycerides on this web page.

You vet should be taking bloodwork more than 6 hours after the last meal, to confirm if triglycerides are really high.

It’s not uncommon for diabetic cats to have high triglycerides but that’s a bit too high. My guess is she wasn’t fasted and possibly her food is higher fat. One test is nothing to get worried about but it’s probably a good idea to have her retested in a couple months after being fasted at least six hours.

I hadn't really thought about that, in fact before I took her to the vet I gave her some kibble as a reward to calm her down so it definitely affected the values. But why didn't the vet ask me if she had eaten? Aaaarghhh......

She is taking Solensia for arthrosis, as if diabetes was not enough... Poor thing. Yes, surely the vet should have warned me. I'll call him later

Not sure why. But it’s worth fasting her next time if you can do it safely with her insulin.

Ok. The vet told me to give her GlutaMax advanced, a supplement to protect the liver. I don't know if it is also known in the US. Do you think it's a good idea? Thank you all for your help!
