My cat TJ was diagnosed a week ago with Feline diabetes. His glucose level was 598. He is a small cat, around 8-9 lbs. He is 8 years old and has never been overweight (he looks to be underweight). I'm trying to determine the best pet food to feed him and have been trying different brands. The problem is that he is not eating a lot and doesn't seem to want to drink water. He has been on insulin (1 unit of glargine) for about a week but I've been giving him .5 units for much of this time as he hasn't been eating a lot. Should I not give him the insulin at all if he doesn't eat much? I'm taking him for a glucose curve test tomorrow. Any recommendations on pet food he'll eat? I've tried Instinct, CORE and others. Thanks for your help.

Hi Staci, welcome to you and TJ. HERE is a list of foods, look for ones under 10 carbs. Many of us use Fancy Feast Classic. Please come to the Main Health Forum where we can better help you help TJ.

Thank you very much Sharon! I will go to the main health forum as well. I appreciate your help, I'm brand new. :)

Welcome! Glad you found this site. Where are you from? I ask so maybe someone can suggest a food where you live.

If he's like my cat, he might be interested in very savory/umami things, like tuna, or even 'cat curry' which is roast chicken with a little bit of no onon/garlic curry powder, a little cayenne, salt, and pepper stirred with coconut milk and a little coconut oil. He might also go for stinky cheeses, like feta, but be careful because too much dairy can be bad.

The vet can also prescribe an appetite stimulant like Mirtazapine. Buy a pill cutter, they're a pain to chop into eighths.

Not interested in water seems strange. Is TJ on wet food right now or a mix? Any other medical problems or things that just don't seem right?
