My cat Mao is 12 years, she is normally 12Ib. I saw her lost 2 Ib and alway hungry, then she was diagnosed with diabetes at the vet office, her blood sugar was 360, so the vet suggested giving her the insulin. Since my cat is a very nerves cat I tested her the next day at home, her blood sugar was down to 178.
Then I started testing her blood sugar for two weeks, and her level is between 158-190. I brought her to the vet office again because Mao lost more weight, the blood works came out was 308, the vet said she can start small does of insulin. The day before our appointment to learn how to give her insulin, Mao was shaking so bad and breath heavily. I check her blood sugar was 150. I gave her a little honey, almost immediately she was calm down. I remember that day Mao only ate a little food, Maybe it's the reason, but the vet said 150 was still high, did not why but gave her some antibiotics. Mao has been eaten Natural Verity Instinct Rabbit can food for three years, I now ordered her some Feline Pride raw meat. She is now around 8Ib, still loose little bit weight. She does not drink, pee a lot, but defiantly more than normal. The very unusual thing is that she poops lot, smell awful. The vet seemed confused with Mao's condition and said she may have some other issue rather then diabetes, and said to give her X-ray. I don't know. I think Mao is diabetes, but would like to know if or not I can give her insulin when her blood sugar level is at the borderline. The vet said if her blood sugar is below 200, then she is not considered diabetes. What should I do? My cat still loosing weight. Please give me some suggestions, your help is appreciated!
 
welcome! It sounds like Mao might be a borderline diabetic. We generally consider a cat in remission (or non diabetic) if they range from 40 -120 with the majority of the time spent in double digits. A new diabetic is encouraged not to shoot under 200.

What food? Sometimes a change to wet low carb food will lower the blood glucose levels by quite a bit. (100 points in my cat when we changed from dry to wet.). If you'd give a food under 8% carbs, that might really help.

Cats are stressed at the vet. It certainly sounds like Mao is. Stress raises levels, sometimes as much as 100 points. We like to test our cats at home because we feel the numbers are more accurate. We'd love to teach you how.

I don't know about the Poop. Could it be connected to the food? We have a kitty in The PZI forum who is regulated great numbers but has horrid smelling poo. The bean has tried pumpkin with no luck. The next idea is FortiFlora, a probiotic. You can get it on the internet.
 
When you say poops a lot, do you mean that she has diarrhea? I'm not a vet so I can't tell you for certain, and even a vet probably would not diagnose online. I will say that I have worked with rescue cats for years and generally speaking, when their poo smells so bad that it is worth mentioning, something is going on. It can be a variety of things, though. Make sure they are checking for parasites.

Sometimes, the pancreas is damged and reduces its ability to make digestive enzymes. This results in weight loss due to poor digestion. The poop smells awful and may be somewhat loose - "pudding poo". It may be a lighter color, even grayish. If that describes what you are seeing, ask with your vet about exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The treatment for that is to replace the enzymes and several are available over the counter in the US.

It is also possible that her gastrointestinal (GI) tract has an imbalance of bacteria, also resulting in poor digestion. Probiotics such as Forti Flora, or 1-2 teaspoons on plain yogurt with active cultures added to her diet each day might help.

If she ever goes outside, she may have eaten something that caused an infection in her GI tract. That also can resulut in foule smelling feces and diarrhea.

Mao is an indoor cat, she ate grain free wet food for many years, I have just started to feed her high protein raw meatI since her diagnosed with diabetes. She does not have diarrhea, her poop is yellowish and formed. She is weak, I can tell she is not feeling well. I gave her a home test today, her BG was 185, if her BG is not high enough to have insulin, what should I do? I am so worry because she is loosing weight.
 
When was the 185? Was it a preshot number? What kind of insulin? The type of insulin can determine how you dose.

We generally consider a cat in remission if they range from 40 - 120, with the majority of the time in double digits, off insulin. We usually suggest that new diabetics not shoot under 200, but wait 20 minutes, without feeding, and retest. You want to be sure the number is risng and over 200.

She does seem to have lower range of numbers, but they are diabetic numbers. Since she is eating low carb, it doesn't seem like food will be the answer.

I don't know. Depending on the insulin, you might try to get her numbers lower. It does seem like she might be having some other issues with the poop problem. We might have a member near you who knows a good vet that could give you a second opinion.
 
I have very little experience with diabetic cats. I am caring for my first one, so I am not sure how normal it is for them to have off poo. Did they do a chem panel on your kitty when you took him in? Hopefully, like Sienne said, you can hook up with someone on here in your area and get a suggestion about where to get a second opinion.
 
IMPORTANT: Just feeding raw meat is not a complete diet.

There are essential nutrients that are missing when you don't add appropriate supplements. Please see the recipe posted at Cat Info

Nutrient deficiencies could cause some of what you are seeing.
 
Mao has not used any insulin yet due to her BG level. I home test her blood sugar two hours after her breakfast and 2,3 times a week; the level is always below 200. She drinks lots of water. She does not pee lots but it is sugar smell urine. I ordered the raw rabbit from felinespride.com, she has been eaten it for two weeks, still lost weight so I think the food doesn't work for her. I am gonna bring her to the vet again, and bring her urine sample too. Thank you all for the advices. I will let you know what the vet says.
 
How often are you testing her?

What kind of insulin do you have? Do you have insulin?

It may be time to give her a very small amount of insulin?

Also there could be something non-diabetes related going on too. When she was at the vet did they do a complete blood test? Did it include testing the T4 and Free T4?
 
The poops it could be from the food change to raw - could have been too sudden for her.. was she doing those poops before the food change?

Otherwise it sounds like Exocrine Pancreatic insufficiency to me. My bailey has it - the poops are puffier than they should be. Pale coloured and smelly. And he does it twice a day or more. Very hungry and weight loss even though he eats a lot.

However she also sounds borderline diabetic and may need a small amount of insulin.

The food change may help reduce her blood sugar a bit but you need to make sure her diet is balanced - she won't get the correct nutrients on few meat alone. Check out this site to learn how to make your own food - http://www.catinfo.org
