My kitty who has been bouncing the last couple of days is at 248 this evening. She did not have insulin this morning. She was 62 first thing this morning, then 133 +4 , 220 +6 and now 248 +11.5. Please advise.

Hi Mary,

Glad you made your way here. She is looking really good to be at that number after 24 hours since the last shot. Can you definitely get a before bed test and set the alarm for nadir? My thinking is that she needs insulin but only a tiny amount and monitoring.

How much insulin and what time should I set my alarm for Nadir? No problem getting before bed test.

I agree, Sue. Mary, can you give less than 0.5? Maybe like...0.25 (half of half a unit). Are you using the u40 needles?

I am thinking a drop. So, pull up a half unit of water in your syringe. Let out drops, counting as you go. Then you know how many drops are in 0.5. You can then pull up 0.5 units of insulin and let out drops saving one or two.

It may not be enough but we are collecting data. Once we see how a drop or two works then we can increase if needed. I am thinking better safe than sorry, especially overnight.

I'd set my alarm for 6 hours after the shot and see how low this dose took her.

Does that sound okay?

I think if you can give a drop, that would be great. Clearly, she doesn't need much. Either way, whatever you decide, I would get a test in a few hours, and definitely a nadir.

Okay, I will experiment with the water and see how much a drops are in 0.5, then I will aim for 1 drop. She is eating now but I will give it to her as soon as she is done.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!

I forgot about the drop method, so glad Sue was here to explain it! :) Let us know how things go tonight, Mary! I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of numbers you get.

It seems like such a tiny amount I felt like I didn't give her anything. I am going out to dinner and will test her when I get home and report back.

It is. But as Sue said, better safe than sorry. And she is at a really nice number considering she didn't get any insulin today at all. ENJOY your dinner. It's good to get out for a bit and relax.

+4 reading 140. I will set alarm for nadir in 2.5 hours and hope for something good!

That's a nice slow drop. It looks like this will be a flatter cycle which will be a nice change for you both.

I don't think you will need it tonight, but just for reference, here are hypo directions. If you get a number below 50 give some regular food and retest in 20 minutes. If it drops further, give a few teaspoons of the gravy off gravy higher carb food and test in 20 minutes. If it continues to drop, put karo syrup on her gums and retest. The idea is to use food to slow the drop and keep her in safe numbers. You want three rising tests before you relax.

In the morning, don't shoot under 200. If she is higher (in the 300s for example), you might try two drops. I am in Colorado so you are likely to be shooting before I am awake.

That is great info. Thank you so much. I hope I won't need it but it makes me feel better knowing what to do, especially since you might not be available! The vet called me tonight to see how Toes was doing for the first time since she was diagnosed on Wednesday. LAME

I hope you won't need it too! It does look like she is having a nice drop tonight. I like that it is gentler...it's easier on her and on you!

I'm usually the early bird around here, but I will most likely not be on when you shoot tomorrow morning as it's the weekend. I should be around during the week, but on the weekend, I usually get up to feed the cats and go back to bed! I think Sue's plan for tomorrow is great. No shot under 200 and if she is in the 200s, probably 1 drop again. Higher, 2 drops. It looks like 1 drop is giving you a nice cycle so far tonight, so hopefully it will give you a nice preshot number too! :)
