Hi all,

My cat Lilli was well known to this forum as she had diabetes a year ago. She had been off insulin for a year and then one month ago I noticed a lump on her back. I immediately took her to the vet as the lump was growing extremely aggressively. Diagnosis: injection induced fibrosarcoma (most likely due to the insulin injections!).

She was operated two weeks ago and before operating they had measured her BG and fructosamine which was perfect.

After surgery she was not eating. Unfortunately, I work abroad and am never home so during this time my parents were taking care of her. She was not eating and therefore the vet suggested giving her dry food to see (she used to love dry food). I insisted not to, as it was totally unnecessary and was not worth the risk. But she was not eating and at this point it was good to see her eat whatever she could.

Now 2 weeks later I measured her BG and it's > 300. I am desperate. Can this be due to the anestesia/surgery recovery or is this due to the food? (she had surgery 2 weeks ago). She is now back at 100% low carb diet, but should I immediately put her back on insulin? It's Saturday and the vet is closed.

I am really in need of help.

The higher numbers could be a result of the surgery, especially if she's still experiencing any post-surgical discomfort or inflammation. A couple of things are other possibilities. If it were me, I'd get Lilli into the vet to be certain there's not an infection present. Infection or inflammation can cause a rise in blood glucose numbers. The stress of surgery and recovery could have thrown her out of remission. Any form of illness can trigger a relapse. (We see this a lot in cats who need dental work -- it's a common cause for dropping out of remission.) If she's had a loss of appetite, it could mean an infection is present.

I wouldn't be convinced that Lilli is out of remission based on one test. Get a few tests, especially since she's been eating dry food -- and get rid of the dry food in her diet. There can be any number of reasons for a couple of tests to be outside of normal range. Have you seen any other symptom? Is Lilli drinking and urinating excessively?

Thank you so much for reassuring me!! Yes I had noticed she was drinking and urinating more frequently. I have stopped the dry food and have gone back to strict low carb diet and her BG already dropped to 150. I will keep her monitored but this is already a success for me! I don’t want to start insulin again if her BG is below 200.

thanks all!

Hi Valentina just a suggestion you can set up a tab for 2022 and start entering Lilly's BG numbers so we can follow along . I hope she's feeling much better :bighug::cat:
