Hi Everyone.
First, I'd like to extend my gratitude for this website and the info. it contains. This whole disease of feline diabetes is really taking a toll on both our cat Rudy, and mom and dad trying our best to regulate proper Glucose levels.
To be sure I have the correct "good reading" I want a reading of around 100 - 110 mg/dl, correct? This is what I have been aiming for. Sometimes with good success sometimes a little over.
However, today, I checked his BG and got a reading of 409 mg/dl. I know the strips are good. Just purchased them. I usually give him just under 3 units of Prozinc PZI Insulin, should I be worried about this unusually high reading today and continue with same dose or, take hin down to say 2 units BID for a few days and moniter his levels? Please anyone with some advice? I was wondering if this might also be the Somogyi Effect? Thank you, Ev.

In the meantime, are you using a human or pet meter? Is the 409 reading before or after food and at what time since his previous shot?

I wouldn't necessarily worry about one high reading but without more info, it's difficult to determine whether this is just a blip or there might be another cause. As Sharon said, it would help to know when that reading occurred in the cycle. Do you test pre-shot? If so, and this was not the pre-shot reading, what was the pre-shot reading?
Also, have you observed any change in Rudy's appetite or urination habits/behaviour? A urinary tract/respiratory/other infection or dental issues could cause raised BG levels. Have you changed his diet just recently? Is there any chance Rudy pilfered food from another animal in your family?

If this is an isolated reading, I wouldn't be thinking Somogyi so if you can provide more details, we can try to help you figure this out.

Yep, as Linda says, it's just one reading. I only worry about one reading if it is low. The questions they've asked will help us to figure out why you had that number...but in the end, it might just be one number. :)
