Hi. And thank you everyone for replying to my original post I will be replying back to everyone as soon as I can. I have another couple questions. First one, what do you recommend for a ketone meter? Also is a ketone plus glucose meter accurate? I don’t want to have to be poking him more than I need to if I can get a two in one. Other question might be hard for someone to answer since I have not done my spreadsheet yet I am going to do that tonight for sure . But anyways he’s usually in the 320-350 range before insulin (preshot) and he does eat a full meal. I am giving the 2 units of vetsulin however within an hour or two he drops down to the 100 range and last night he went as low as 66. I know it’s hard for you to give advice without knowing his numbers throughout the day but he is usually around the 130- 220 range the whole day after insulin and then goes past 300 right before it’s needed again. But the fact he has been dropping to 100 or below now so quickly makes me worried. Any advice would be appreciated thank you. And again he is a DKA case I know that may make a difference .

Was the 66 on the libre or the ReliOn? That means you need to decrease the dose by 1/4 unit to 1.75. The 2 is taking him too low and we do dose adjustments here by the lowest he goes in a cycle or nadir, not the preshot numbers.

also, it’s helpful for members giving you advice if you can link your previous post to the top of the new one so they can get all the info. Thanks!

Hi thank you for you reply. I am still new to all this so I’m learning every day thanks to all of the help on here ! And the 66 was on the Libre. Are the readings usually off on the Libre ? I know I tested him on the reli on and the Libre at the same time yesterday and there was a difference of 20 with the reli on having the higher number.

Yeap, what Kyle said. When you get a below 90 on the libre, I’d double check with the ReliOn. It’s not so much of an issue on high numbers, more so on the low ones since according to our dosing method, every time your cat goes below 90 on a human meter, you decrease the dose by 1/4 unit. I’d still advise you to change the dose to 1.75 moving forward.

Anything below 90 earns him a reduction and any number below 50 is a take action number. If this was my cat, I’d have fed MC food and retested in 20-30 minutes after that 66 to make sure he didn’t keep going down, especially with Vetsulin which is a harsh fast acting insulin. Anything below 80, I’d personally monitor closely.

What do you mean by MC food? And I did that I gave him some licks of fancy feast gravy centers and he went back up to 100. Thank you for the help! All the advice has been so helpful!

That’s good then. MC is medium carb like fancy feast grilled. Gravy lovers is HC high carb. You can also mix a few drops of Karo or honey with LC low carb food to get a higher carb content.
