Plants in new home -- am I being paranoid?

Hi everyone,

Moritz and I just moved into my mom's home temporarily as I search for a new job. We have things set up such that my mom's house plants are either up high where he can't get to them or in a room to which the door is closed. Earlier today I noticed that the door to this room was accidentally left open (not sure if I did that or if it was my mom). In any case, when I noticed Moritz wasn't in my room, I went looking for him and found him in the room with the plants. I didn't actually see him eat any of them, but some of them are on the floor. And there's a poinsettia that's on a table he could have gotten to (by jumping up on the chair and then the table). Again, I didn't actually see him eat any of the plants, but I have a tendency to get nervous very easily, and I'm worried he might have eaten something. Now I keep watching him to make sure he's ok.

I closed the door to the room, so he can't get back in there. Should I do anything else? Does it sound like I'm being paranoid?

Sorry to bother you all with my worries! I'm trying to learn how to calm down, but it's a work in progress.

Thanks so much!
Elena

Monitor behavior, appetite, etc. If drastic symptoms, go to nearest ER vet.

If you see anything slightly worrisome, here is the contact page for ASPCA Animal Poison Control They do charge.

"Animal Poison Control Center
We are your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card."

You may want to go and look at the plants as well for signs of being nibbled on... just to ease your mind a bit. My older cat Smokey got into my plants a couple of times, but were obvious chew marks. I've started buying her cat grass to nibble on. She loves it, only nibbles for a day or two, and then it usually dies... but it makes her happy.

Thanks for your quick replies. I don't see anything that looks like obvious bite marks on the plants. I'll continue to be on the lookout for strange behavior. I guess those things would include lack of appetite or extreme inactivity? Do you know how quickly symptoms would appear if he had ingested something dangerous?

Thanks again so much for your help and patience!

I don't think you are being paranoid at all. Last year for my birthday my husband brought home a bouquet of flowers for me. Since our civvie twix likes to eat anything/everything I set them up on top of the fridge while I showered. Came out and found her on the counter with a lily petal next to her. Thought I should check it out to see if it was bad for kitties, which it is! So I rushed her to the vet and she had to have her stomach filled with charcoal to get her to throw up (which she did .. at home .. all over the carpet, but there in full form was a lily petal ohmygod_smile ) And I had to take her back for five straight days to get fluids to flush out any poison in her system. Thankfully no damage was done but I told Peter to never bring me flowers again!
