Plain yogurt for a treat?

Can I give Lucy a taste of plain, nonfat yogurt as her treat after testing? It used to be her favorite treat of all, and she still sashays wishfully into the kitchen when she hears me open the container. It would be so much easier than prying out a smidgen of tuna from the freezer. I mean just a quarter or half teaspoonful. Been meaning to ask this for weeks.

It shouldn't be a problem, no sugars or sweeteners in it correct. I think it only becomes a problem if the cat is lactose intolerant. And I'd love to see her sashaying!

Lactose is sugar though. So everything with milk in it will have at least a little sugar. Scooter's old owners told me before I adopted them that "he HAS to have his cream EVERY MORNING". Nu uh. He sat at the fridge and yowled and went nuts every time I pulled the cream carton out of the fridge for all of maybe a month before he forgot about it. Now he doesn't even give the cream carton a second glance.

Plain yogurt contains 12 g of sugar for every 6 oz. container, on average.

So that's about 3 teaspoons of sugar in a 6oz cup. Give it a try and see if it raises her BG. If it doesn't spike her BG and doesn't give her diarrhea (lots of cats get diarrhea from dairy) I can't see it being bad for her.

I'm sure you could take a small bag of tuna out of the freezer and leave it in the fridge, it should keep for a couple of days in a baggie just fine though!

I think it's fine. My vet actually recommended a teaspoon or two of yogurt a day(I used plain super yogurt from Wegmans) as an added probiotic boost for him, since he has a testy GI system. There was organic sugar in the ingredients (you can find plan yogurt without sugar), but the vet said said he would be getting such a small amount, and that it would clear from his system so quickly that I didn't need to worry about it with his diabetes. I was skeptical, but I tested him to see how it was effecting him and she was right. It would give him a short boost to his BG (about 20-30 points) and clear completely within an hour or two. I ended up deciding to go with Fortiflora as a probiotic for him because I thought it would be more effective, but I hung on to the yogurt and used it as a quick BG booster if he was dropping a little too low for nerves at night when I wouldn't be awake, either before bed or at his 1am test. Worked perfectly for me for that purpose and gave me much better control over his BG than the dry treats or the gravy foods I was using as boosters before that because it cleared so fast.

Despite Bandit's sensitive GI system, he isn't lactose intolerant, but many cats are. If you see any runny poo, you'll want to stop.
