Hey guys, well piper has a UTI. There was blood in her urine this morning. Then she started going every three minutes, and then she vomited. Took her to the vet. They didn't run any tests, just gave her covenia. She's never had symptoms this severe. It was scary. Hoping it really is just a UTI. Anything I should be looking out for? Thank you!!

In order to do a proper test for a UTI a sterile sample should be taken. If antibiotics are needed a culture and sensitivity test should be sent out to find exactly what antibiotic would work with that particular bacteria. Convenia is not a good choice for a UTI. It was originally developed for use in treating skin infections, but has been used for many other things since it is "convenient" . Please watch for any unusual side effects as convenia has caused adverse effects in some kitties.

Nope. No urine sample. She is a very hostile cat. They just wanted to try the drug, and if she is better, then that's great. If she wasn't then they are going to have me bring her back tomorrow. She is significantly better. It's been in her system now for 5 hours. She is sleeping, eating, and drinking water. I really hope there are no bad side effects! What should I be watching for?

Even a good antibiotic can take a day or two to work. Convenia lasts about 14 days in the system, so you would not want to give another antibiotic on top of it.

Here is some information on Convenia"

Thank you for information! I hope she is okay on it. I called the vet, and they gave it to her back in February. She was fine after. I hope she still is!

Some kitties will do okay with it, but it certainly isn't the first line choice for UTIs. It is used for many things other than the original intended use, simply because it is convenient and many people would rather have one shot as opposed to having to pill their kitty every day for 10 days.

You may want to look I to trying some d mannose. It can really help prevent and clear UTI's caused by E. coli, which is the #1 cause. I use 1/8 tsp in Colin's food at first sign.

Thank you, Sharon! I went out and got some. Do you think I should start it now?

I don't think it can hurt. Might as well go ahead and start it. If it doesn't help it certainly wont hurt!

Let us know how Piper is today!

Thank you, Rachel! She is much better today. Eating, sleeping, drinking, peeing normally. I'm 90% sure there isn't any blood in her urine. I am so thankful. Yesterday when she was in so much pain it was so scary. I am really hoping the covenia doesn't do any long term damage! I am going to wait until tomorrow to start her on the d-monosse. I just want to be around to monitor her after I give it to her. Thank you so much for asking about her!
