Does anyone know if the pill pockets for dogs are the same as the feline ones? The local PetCo ran out of the feline greenies so I bought a pouch of the canine ones (same flavor - chicken formula) just in case I run out before I can get some more. Do you think these are OK?

I believe its the duck & pea variety that is low carb.

ETA - according to the Greenies web site, the chicken flavor does have dried corn syrup in it (= sugar) but the duck & pea flavor does not.

I realize the duck & pea variety is preferred for diabetic kitties. Unfortunately Gem will not eat that one, and she has many medications to take so I really have no choice.

I was trying to figure if the canine & feline versions were the same, assuming the same flavor.

Yes, the cat and the dog are pretty much the same thing.

As Gabby's cancer progressed, she started refusing the pill pockets. For a while I got by with her by molding a small piece of american cheese around the pill (just like a pill pocket), and rolling it in canned tuna, salmon, sardines, turkey, etc. This worked well for quite some time.I mention this because the cheese & tuna/salmon/turkey would be low carb.

After she would no longer eat the cheese rolled in ___, I used a small piece of pill pocket around the pill, and crushed and molded one of her junky pounce treats over top of that. Just another idea in case she starts refusing whatever you're giving.

Thanks Julia - I do try and mix it up with some plain chicken, plain roast beef etc to try and keep it lo-carb, and put off her getting tired of the pill pockets. Haven't tried cheese yet, I'll have to see if she eats that. All this people food is totally new for her, her whole life she never showed any interest in it!

They are a little different:

Cat:

Real chicken: Chicken, glycerin, wheat flour, natural flavors, dried corn syrup, corn flour, wheat gluten, chicken liver meal, vegetable oil, lecithin, brewers dried yeast, preserved with potassium sorbate, methylcellulose, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), preserved with mixed tocopherols, vitamin E supplement.

dog:
INGREDIENTS:

I bought the dog pill pockets thinking I could get more out of them since they're larger than the cat pill pockets. They have a smoked scent to them and neither of my kitties would touch them.
I ended up giving them to a co-worker.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

So while there are slight variations in the formulation and a bit of a different flavor, there is nothing in the dog ones that poses a problem for a cat. Really I would just use them to tide me over if I run out of the others, but I didn't want to accidentally give her something that was really bad for her. She has enough to deal with already :) I know there are major differences that make dog food inappropriate for cats, didn't know if this was a similar situation.

i usually buy the dog sized pill pockets. it's a much better buy than buying the cat sized ones. actually, if you ask me, the cat sized ones are a bit of a ripoff if you buy them at a store. LOL!!

and fwiw, i personally don't worry about the carb content in pill pockets. i just figure that whatever i'm treating with the pill pockets is a little more life or death than the diabetes and i can deal with the bg numbers :-) for instance, i've had a respiratory illness running it's course thru my house for 2 weeks now, whole shebang....congested kitties, sneezing kitties, inappetant kitties, wheezing kitties, thought we were going to the ER several times last weekend. i'm going thru pill pockets like they are going out of style, one bag in just a week! if i can get these kids to take their meds with a pill pocket and not even know they are taking meds, i'm gonna do it, diabetic or not. beats old fashioned pilling of 10 cats. LOL!! thank god we've almost got it cleared up. have to buy more pill pockets though. :-)

Cindy - that's pretty much how I feel. As you can see from my signature, Gem has lots of medical issues, takes about 4 diff pills, twice a day. No way could I pill her. At one point when it was just Abx I had it compounded into a liquid - that worked for a while, but it's bloody expensive and she stopped tolerating that anyway. So yes, the trade off is well worth it, I will deal with whatever BG spike in exchange for getting the meds in her. If she ate the duck ones, I'd do it, but she does it. I just wanted to be sure there was nothing in the dog ones that was problematic for a cat.

Good luck getting off the meds, I am blowing through them as well :)

:-)

fwiw, if it helps at all, i buy mine from lambertvetsupply.com
they have really good prices usually when i am in need of them. i did buy cat ones this last time as they had some that were short dated so they were like $3.25 a package. i got them and the date is october of this year which of course i'll go thru long before then. especially with the respiratory thing breaking out

Thanks for the tip. I'm realizing that I will have to price-shop and buy online much more than I have been. I find I am constantly running into PetCo, which happens to be down the block from me, every other day when I am running low on things. Not the most efficient way to shop! Between the greenies, the meds, and most of all those test strips, keeping this cat alive is costing me a bundle (that's not even counting the vet visits and tests). Don't get me wrong, I love her, and will do what I can, but it would be great to save some money on some of this stuff. I had to get test strips at the local pharmacy - $88 for 50 strips!!!

Thanks, I know lots of people here buy off eBay. I kinda stink at eBay shopping but I will look into it. Thx for the other websites.
